Statement on the 50th Anniversary of the Caribbean Community- Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Guyana)

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation is pleased to extend greetings to all the people of the Caribbean Community on the occasion of CARICOM Day 2023. This year is of special significance as it marks the Golden Jubilee of the founding of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), which came into being with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, in Trinidad and Tobago on 4 July 1973 by the leaders of Guyana, Barbados, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago.

Good afternoon.

Today, it is my honour to welcome you to the beautiful twin-island Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, for the convening of the 45th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.  For us here in the Caribbean, this is a significant event, as tomorrow we also launch the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the signing of the Original Treaty of Chaguaramas, right here in Trinidad and Tobago.

Understanding the CARICOM Agreement on Social Security

Social security is a crucial aspect of ensuring the well-being and financial stability of individuals and their families. In the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), a regional integration organization comprising 15 member states, including Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, among others, a significant step has been taken to coordinate social security programs and protect the entitlement of CARICOM nationals to benefits. This step is known as the CARICOM Agreement on Social Security.

Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago Claim Top Prizes at 16th CARICOM Road Races -10K

The 16th CARICOM Road Races concluded yesterday, Sunday, 2 July, in Trinidad and Tobago, with Guyana and the host country taking top honours in a 10K event.

Guyanese Attoya Harvey claimed first prize in the Overall Female category and the CARICOM Secretary-General’s Trophy, while Samantha Shikla of Trinidad and Tobago)and Laura Lynn Limery of Saint Lucia won second and third prizes, respectively.

CARICOM Heads of Government Meeting opens today

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana - Monday, 3 July 2023): Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government meet in Trinidad and Tobago, 3-5 July 2023, for their 45th Regular Meeting and to launch a year of celebrations to mark the 50th Anniversary of the founding of the regional grouping. 

The Caribbean Court of Justice

Overview 

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) exercises both an Original and Appellate jurisdiction within the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). It is the only competent legal authority in CARICOM to interpret and apply the Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (RTC), establishing the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). In this realm, the CCJ reinforces the rights and obligations of Member States and CARICOM citizens participating in the CSME.  

Austin Bramble: Only Living Signatory to the Treaty of Chaguaramas

Ninety-two-year-old Percival Austin Bramble, former Chief Minister of Montserrat, is the only surviving Head of Government who signed the Treaty of Chaguaramas which established the Caribbean Community. Errol Barrow, Forbes Burnham, Michael Manley and Dr. Eric Williams, the Prime Ministers of Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago respectively, were the four original signatories on 4 July 1973, at Chaguaramas in Trinidad and Tobago.
