CARICOM Secretariat to develop sustainable ocean management framework

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is making significant strides towards enhancing ocean governance and sustainable management of marine resources. With the support of a £190,000 from the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (UK FCDO), the CARICOM Secretariat is embarking on a comprehensive initiative to develop a robust framework for sustainable ocean management.

CARICOM at ‘pivotal’ COP16

Representatives from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have joined their counterparts from across the globe for the two-week Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Biodiversity Convention (COP16 ) now underway in Cali, Colombia. COP16 sessions began on Monday, 21 October.

It is with a deep sense of honour, pride and responsibility that I deliver this message on the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of the Standing Committee of Caribbean Statisticians and the 16th Observance of Caribbean Statistics Day under the theme 'Improving Lives through Statistics, Strengthening and Innovating together'.

I join with all before me, in welcoming you to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and to Caribbean Week of Agriculture 2024.

I am indeed happy, that since arriving on the weekend, many had the opportunity to attend both Miss SVG on Saturday night, and the adventurous field tour yesterday, which took us sailing along the Leeward Coast, and we were able to see the Windward side of the island up to Spring.

CARICOM PREPARES FOR COP29: Announces ministerial leads for strategic advocacy

Georgetown, Guyana – October 3, 2024 – The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) is preparing for the Twenty-Ninth Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP29) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which is scheduled to take place from 11-22 November 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. This pivotal event will see CARICOM Member States advocating for urgent climate action and robust financial commitments to address the unique vulnerabilities of Small Island Developing States (SIDS).

Barbados launches First Bio-CNG Vehicle Powered by Sargassum

The Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) was lauded recently for its support that led to the launch of the first vehicle to be powered by bio-compressed natural gas (CNG). Rum and Sargassum Inc., a local deep-tech start-up, and The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus launched the vehicle mid-September. The bio-CNG uses rum distillery wastewater and a sargassum-based biomethane, an innovative fuel source derived from the invasive seaweed which is plaguing the Region’s coasts.
