Trade officials advance preparations for ministerial talks in Guyana

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - Assistant Secretary-General for the Directorate of CARICOM Single Market and Trade, Ambassador Wayne McCook delivered remarks at the opening of the Caribbean Policy Development Centre's Regional Policy Meeting on Tuesday 8 October 2024 at the Crane Resort in St. Philip Barbados, under the theme, “Envisioning Caribbean development over the next 50 years and the role that CARICOM intends to play.”

Second CARICOM Member State ratifies BBNJ Agreement

Barbados joins Belize as the second CARICOM Member State to ratify the Agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of Marine Biological Diversity of Areas beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ Agreement). The Agreement was adopted during the 79th United Nations General Assembly. During this period, Jamaica also signed the Treaty joining Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Dominica, Saint Lucia and St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Barbados launches First Bio-CNG Vehicle Powered by Sargassum

The Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) was lauded recently for its support that led to the launch of the first vehicle to be powered by bio-compressed natural gas (CNG). Rum and Sargassum Inc., a local deep-tech start-up, and The University of the West Indies Cave Hill Campus launched the vehicle mid-September. The bio-CNG uses rum distillery wastewater and a sargassum-based biomethane, an innovative fuel source derived from the invasive seaweed which is plaguing the Region’s coasts.

CARICOM leaders endorse new global pact on the future

(Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - Leaders of the Caribbean Community (CARCOM) have endorsed the United Nations-led Pact for the Future which is viewed as the most-wide ranging international agreement in many years to safeguard the future of the global community.
