Barbados Developing Intellectual Property Strategic Plan

Barbados’ government has formulated a national intellectual property strategic plan, it said this week.

The plan, which is being developed with the assistance of the World Intellectual Property Organization, aims to make the country’s economy “more competitive globally,” the government said.

According to Heather Clarke, registrar of Barbados’ Corporate Affairs and Intellectual Property Office, “such competitiveness could only be achieved through creativity, productivity and innovation in the economic, cultural and social sectors.”

Barbados hailed for its climate change efforts

Small Island Development States (SIDS) were praised during the yesterday’s Global Celebration of World Environment Day 2014 for the front line position they have taken to fight the disastrous effects of climate change. Barbados to Develop “Blueprint” For Science, Technology Education

Barbados’ government says it is planning to develop a “blueprint” to reform its Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) teaching across its education system.

Labour, Social Security and Human Resource Development Minister Dr Esther Byer Suckoo pointed this week to what she saw as the “need to create a culture of research, innovation and entrepreneurship” in Barbados.

Cultural Heritage tourism a fast growing niche for countries

Barbados must move with haste to cash in on the benefits to be made from the fast-growing cultural heritage tourism niche.

Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Richard Sealy, offered this suggestion to scores of preservationists attending the 1st Caribbean Conference of National Trusts and Preservation Societies yesterday at the Savannah Hotel.

Noting there were significant gains to be made from cultural heritage tourism, Mr. Sealy said: “There is ample evidence now that cultural heritage tourism is indeed one of the fastest growing segments of tourism.

BARBADOS-LABOUR-No breakthrough in talks to end sugar workers strike

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Labour Minister Dr Esther Byer Suckoo is expected to continue talks here on Tuesday after talks with officials of the of the Barbados Agricultural Management Corporation (BAMC) and the Barbados Workers Union (BWU) failed to end a six-day strike by sugar workers on Monday.


Workers at the island’s lone sugar factory Portvale have been off the job for the past week protesting the manner in which 50 of their colleagues at the Andrews Sugar Factory were retrenched by the BAMC last month.
