From Dialogue to Action: Advancing Digital Transformation in the Caribbean

The second edition of the School of Digital Transformation and Innovation in the Caribbean (SoDTIC) successfully convened from 16-20 June 2025 at the Trinidad Hilton and Conference Centre in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. This premier capacity-building initiative brought together policymakers, regulators, academics, technical experts, and development partners from across Latin America and the Caribbean to engage in high-level dialogue and practical training on advancing digital transformation and innovation in the region.

New Institute of Maroon and Indigenous Studies Proposed for UWI Mona and Maroon Communities

Professor Sir Hilary Beckles, The UWI Vice-Chancellor and Chair, CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) has welcomed the recommendation from Jamaica’s Maroon community to establish a new institute to research, document and share the rich history, culture and contribution of Maroon and Indigenous people. The CRC Chair shared this with a large gathering at the opening of the historic symposium on Maroons, held at The UWI West Indies Regional Headquarters (where) on 9 January 2025.

Once again, The University of the West Indies (The UWI) is launching a Task Force to assist with the mobilisation of the region’s public health providers to deal with an incoming virus. Four years ago, the Zika virus triggered the response; today it is COVID-19.

The UWI Activates Coronavirus Response Plan

Today, The UWI will host a Vice-Chancellor’s Forum which will offer informed analysis and perspectives. The  programme will include remarks from Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Hilary Beckles and feature UWI health experts along with Dr Joy St. John, CARPHA’s Executive Director.It begins at 1:00 pm (Jamaica)/2:00 pm (Eastern Caribbean) at The UWI Regional Headquarters, and will be carried live on UWItv’s cable television channel and livestreamed on www.uwitv.org.

CARICOM, UN to strengthen cooperation at New York meeting

Cooperation between the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the United Nations (UN) System will be further strengthened around several issues including climate change, security, human development, health and education at the Ninth CARICOM-United Nations General Meeting this week.

The two-day meeting begins 20 July 2017 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. It is happening against the backdrop of a changing international environment, replete with uncertainty and complexity, and requiring greater collaboration.
