REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), ON THE OCCASION OF THE DISCUSSION FORUM ON YOUTH DEVELOPMENT, 26 MARCH 2010, GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

It gives me particular pleasure to deliver these remarks at this Forum which focuses on the future of Youth in the Caribbean Community and indeed on the future of the Caribbean Community where youth under the age of 30, comprise some 60 percent of its population.

Today’s Forum is part of a process that began with the establishment of the CARICOM Commission on Youth Development by Heads of Government of CARICOM in March 2007.

OPENING REMARKS DELIVERED BY MR GARFIELD BARNWELL, DIRECTOR, SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT, CARICOM SECRETARIAT, AT THE FIRST TRAINING INTERVENTION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL ANTI-DRUG STRATEGIES AND PLANS, 23–26 MARCH 2010, KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES

The Honourable Dr Douglas Slater, Minister of Health and the Environment
Distinguished representatives at the Head table and in the audience
The Media and delegations from our Member States

It is my pleasure to bring greetings on behalf of Mr. Edwin Carrington, the Secretary- General of the Caribbean Community. It is also a pleasure for me to be present at this very important workshop and to give brief remarks.

FEATURE ADDRESS DELIVERED BY MS. DEBORAH DALRYMPLE, DIRECTOR, MARION HOUSE, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES, AT THE OPENING CEREMONY OF THE FIRST TRAINING INTERVENTION FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL ANTI-DRUG STRATEGIES AND PLANS, 23 MARCH 2010, KINGSTOWN, ST. VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES

When my colleague, Patsy Wyllie, Chief Health Educator, at the Ministry of Health asked if I would do the feature address this morning, I did not immediately agree. I thought to myself: What could I say to an audience such as this, comprising persons whom I am sure could teach me a thing or two?

REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) ON THE OCCASION OF THE INAUGURATION OF THE CARIBBEAN AGRICULTURAL HEALTH AND FOOD SAFETY AGENCY (CAHFSA), 18 MARCH 2010, PARAMARIBO, SURINAME

It is with a sense of progress and pride that as Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, I address you at this Inauguration Ceremony of the Headquarters of the Caribbean Agricultural Health and Food Safety Agency (CAHFSA).

Let me at the outset thank the President of Suriname, His Excellency Runaldo Venetiaan.

Remarks Delivered By Dr. Rosina Wiltshire, CARICOM Advocate For Gender Justice, At The Launch Of The Gender Advocacy Programme On International Women’s Day 2010, 8 March 2010, Georgetown, Guyana

I am honored to be appointed as the CARICOM Advocate for Gender Justice. Gender is about both men and women and it is fitting that this initiative is launched on March 8th, International Day of Women. This may seem to be a contradiction, but it is not. Women have always been in the forefront of the struggle for equality, justice and peace for all. However, because of gender inequality, their contribution is often neither recognized nor remembered. How many of you present today know of the work of our own Claudia Jones?

STATEMENT BY RT. HON. HUBERT A. INGRAHAM,  PRIME MINISTER, tHE BAHAMAS, ON THE EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI

My colleagues and I are deeply distressed at the news of what appears to be a very powerful 7.0 earthquake that struck our neighbour Haiti this afternoon.
Our information is that the anticipated threat of a tsunami affecting The Bahamas and other neighbouring states has apparently diminished but there may be some high tides as a result of the earthquake.

We have not yet received any reliable reports of loss of life or damage to property but it is to be expected that the impact of such a powerful earthquake would be severe.
