A special good day to all.

I am very pleased to be here, to address you on behalf of the Caribbean Side of this partnership at this the Inaugural Caribbean-United States Security Cooperation Dialogue. This is an historic phase in an already strong relationship between the United States of America and Caribbean Member States.

This means that there is a critical imperative for us, as a region, to focus on developing and implementing youth focused strategies aimed at promoting social justice and attaining equity and inclusion in education and employment.

Welcome to Guyana and the CARICOM Secretariat!

Since we last met at the Secretariat’s Headquarters in February 2009 on the occasion of the formal launching of Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System (CASSOS), our fledging Institution has suffered a tragic loss, the impact of which is still with us and will continue to be with us for some time.

STATEMENT BY HIS EXCELLENCY BHARRAT JAGDEO, PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GUYANA, 13 jANUARY 2010, ON THE EARTHQUAKE IN HAITI

I was deeply shocked and saddened at the extent of the destruction caused by the catastrophic earthquake which devastated our sister nation of Haiti yesterday. The haunting images of bodies, injured persons and ruined buildings struck a chord of compassion throughout our nation for the people of Haiti.
Haiti as the poorest country in the western hemisphere is now severely challenged to cope with this tragedy. Haiti needs all countries, including the small developing countries to come to its aid urgently.
