It is a pleasure to warmly welcome all of you to the Twenty-Second Meeting of the Regional Cultural Committee (the RCC), a body that has been in existence for over 25 years, having first met on 6-7 June 1987 in Trinidad and Tobago.

A very special welcome to the representatives of Member States who are attending the RCC for the first time. It is a pleasure to welcome you into the CARICOM family of Directors of Culture and we expect that you will very quickly adapt and contribute to the collegial and productive atmosphere in which we are accustomed to working.

It is indeed my pleasure and honour to address you on behalf of the Caribbean States present here today on the occasion of this Eighth UK Caribbean Forum.  Secretary of State, let me at the outset express on behalf of the Caribbean delegations our appreciation for the splendid arrangements made for us to participate in this Forum, and also our pleasure at the warm hospitality extended to us.

It is always a pleasure for me to be a part of any activity involving the youth of our Community and even moreso when it involves the CARICOM Youth Ambassadors (CYAs). Your energy and enthusiasm are a source of inspiration to me and a positive force for driving the integration process in our Community.

The International community is convinced that to reduce poverty and improve living standards in developing countries, it is necessary to promote the integration of statistics and reliable data in the decision-making process. Indeed, the effects of the financial crisis of 2008 are still being felt all over the world with a slow economic recovery. Moreover, inequalities and the poverty have increased in the world during the recent past years.

On behalf of UNDP’s Regional Bureau for Latin America and the Caribbean, I would like to extend my thanks to the CARICOM Secretariat for hosting this very timely High Level Advocacy Forum on Statistics: Strategizing for the Development of Statistics in the Caribbean Community in the Post-2015 Development Agenda.  I wish to also thank the Government and people of Grenada for hosting the conference in beautiful St. Georges, and for the excellent arrangements.

This High Level Forum, made possible by your presence today, signifies the importance of the role of statistics and its further development for the advancement of our people.
As a person trained in this field myself, I do feel a heightened sense of responsibility to ensure that we raise the bar of this important variable in the advancement of our region.
