It is a great pleasure to be here in Saint Lucia once again.  An island deservedly recognised as the "Helen of the West"  

It has had a rich history and like another of our beautiful Caribbean islands, Tobago, the so called bone of contention.

MESSAGE FROM THE SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY ON THE PASSING OF THE HONOURABLE PHILLIP STANLEY WILBERFORCE GOLDSON

It was with great sadness that the Caribbean Community learnt of the death of the Honourable Phillip Stanley Wilberforce Goldson, former Minister of Government of Belize, on Wednesday October 3, 2001 at 78 years of age.

On behalf of the Caribbean Community, the Staff of the CARICOM Secretariat and on my own behalf, I wish to extend deepest condolences to the Government and People of Belize on the passing of an elder statesman who came to be regarded as a National Icon, a Symbol of Heroism and hailed as a Belizean Patriot.

REMARKS OF MR. EDWIN CARRINGTON, SECRETARY GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY AT THE OPENING OF THE FIFTH MEETING OF THE COUNCIL FOR HUMAN AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT , GEORGETOWN, GUYANA, 3 OCTOBER 2001.

It is a special pleasure for me, as Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, to welcome you to the Fifth Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD). This Council is one of the critical organs of the Community. In focusing as it does on vital areas such as education, health, youth, sport, gender and culture, it is concerned with the issues that directly affect the quality of life of the people of this Region.
