ADDRESS BY EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY, ON WORLD AIDS DAY 2001

Today, Saturday, 1 December 2001, the entire world finds itself in the vice-like grip of the most devastating disease ever recorded in the long and enduring history of mankind. Since the first clinical evidence of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) was reported twenty years ago, an unprecedented 60 million people worldwide have become infected with the deadly virus. At this very juncture, an estimated 40 million people from every place on planet earth, every ethnic origin, every religious culture, and every stratum of society are living with HIV/AIDS.

PRESIDENT HIPOLITO MEJIA RECEIVES HIGH LEVEL CARICOM DELEGATION

His Excellency President Hipolito Mejia today received a High-Level Mission from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). The Mission emanated from the decision taken at the recent CARICOM Emergency Heads of Government Meeting in The Bahamas, called to respond to the fall-out for the Region from the September 11th events in the United States.

REGIONAL RESPONSE TO HIV/AIDS/STI UNDER REVIEW BY PROJECT ADVISORY GROUP

The Third Meeting of the Project Advisory Group (PAG) for "Strengthening the Institutional Response to HIV/AIDS/STI in the Caribbean" will take place at the Hilton Hotel in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, on Friday October 26, 2001. This regional project is being funded through the resources of the 8th European Development Fund in the amount of EUR 6,919,220 and executed by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat.
