CARICOM, South Africa solidify diplomatic relations

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and South Africa on Thursday strengthened the long-standing diplomatic relations with the accreditation of a new High Commissioner, Her Excellency Xoliswa Ngwevela.

In accepting her letters of credence, Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said it was a “symbolic reaffirmation of the determination of South Africa and the Member States of CARICOM to augment a long tradition of friendship, solidarity and the promotion of shared values, not just amongst ourselves, but in the global sphere.”

South Africa’s Mandela back home after long hospital stay

JOHANNESBURG, (Reuters) – Anti-apartheid leader and former South African President Nelson Mandela returned to his home yesterday where he will continue to receive intensive care after three months in hospital with a lung ailment.
Mandela, 95, had spent 87 days in a Pretoria hospital after he was rushed there in early June suffering from a recurring infection of the lungs, a legacy of the nearly three decades he spent in jail under apartheid.

Mandela could soon be discharged, Mbeki says

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — Nelson Mandela may be discharged from hospital soon to recuperate at home, said a former president of South Africa. The prediction about Mandela leaving the hospital was made by Thabo Mbeki as he gave a memorial lecture for the African National Congress on Saturday last, reported the South African radio news service Eyewitness News.

Mandela in critical condition

JOHANNESBURG (AP): Nelson Mandela was up to last night listed in critical condition after the South African government announced a deterioration in his health.
The office of President Jacob Zuma said in a statement that he had visited the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader at a hospital Sunday evening and was informed by the medical team that Mandela's condition had become critical in the previous 24 hours.

‘Let Mandela Go’

JOHANNESBURG: South Africa prayed for Nelson Mandela yesterday as the revered peace icon faced a third night in hospital, with calls for the family and the nation to "let him go". Government officials had given no update on Mandela's health since announcing that the 94-year-old was admitted early Saturday and was in a "serious but stable" condition with a lung infection. "I've seen my father and he's well. He's a fighter," his daughter Zindzi told The Guardian newspaper on Sunday.

PRETORIA, South Africa - Nelson Mandela is intensive care as he recovers from a recurring lung infection.
The 94-year-old former president and civil rights leader remains in serious but stable condition, according to President Jacob Zuma's spokesperson Mac Maharaj.
"President Zuma reiterates his call to for South Africa to pray for Madiba (Mandela) and his family at this time," Maharaj said today.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - THE GOVERNMENT of South Africa has found itself in an embarrassing position after having felt compelled to postpone a posthumous conferment of its highest national honour, the Oliver Tambo Award, on Guyana’s late president, Forbes Burnham.
The Tambo Award is normally conferred on outstanding foreign personalities for their contributions in helping to bring about the collapse of apartheid in South Africa.

South Africa wants to widen relationship with Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – South Africa is seeking to widen its relationship with Jamaica under a cooperation agreement dating back to 2009, the country’s ambassador Mathu Joyini has said.
“The one thing that Jamaica does particularly well is sports from the school level. It is something that we can learn,” she said, noting that the 2009 accord encouraged co-operation, as well as facilitating the exchange of knowledge, experience and achievements between both countries in the fields of arts and culture.
