International Youth Reparations Rally and Relay Launched

The Guyana Reparations Committee on Friday launched its leg of the International Youth Reparations Relay and Rally with an event at the Guyana Independence Park.  Speakers at the launch included President of Guyana H. E. David Granger and Chairman, Guyana Reparations Committee, Mr. Eric Phillips.

In his keynote address, President Granger said the call for Reparations was serious business and not a side show. He said the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade was one of the greatest un-natural disasters of all time and a crime against humanity.

CARIFESTA XIII preparations: submissions invited for jingle, logo competitions

In preparation for this country’s hosting of the 13th edition of the Caribbean Festival of Arts (CARIFESTA) from August 17 to 27, 2017, the Government of Barbados is inviting submissions of jingles, as well as designs for the CARIFESTA XIII logo.

Both the winning jingle and logo will be awarded a cash prize of Bds $10,000.

Jingles submitted should be 60 seconds in length; should contain voice, lyrics and musical accompaniment; and should speak to unity and the common heritage of the region. 

CARICOM Reparations Relay Launched in Barbados – Reparations Baton and Torch Will Travel Throughout the Region in 2016

The CARICOM Reparations Commission (CRC) has launched an International Reparations Relay & Rally Initiative in Barbados that in coming months will take a ‘reparations baton’ and ‘reparations torch’ from one CARICOM country to the other.

The baton and torch will be presented to the national reparations commissions across the region at youth rallies organized under the banner ‘Roots, Rock, Reggae, Reparations’ which will celebrate the principles and programmes of the Caribbean and global reparatory justice movements.

CELAC adopts CARICOM’s call for reparations

The Community of Latin and American States CELAC Parliamentary group has adopted the Caribbean Community’s (CARICOM) call for reparations for native genocide and the enslavement of African people in the Caribbean through the Trans-Atlantic slave trade.

Sir Hilary writes open letter to British PM on reparations

The chairman of CARICOM’s Reparation Commission, Sir Hilary Beckles, has penned an open letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron pleading for him to respond to the calls for compensation by the British for the period of slavery in the region.

According to Sir Hillary, otherwise, there could be the greatest political movement of this era.

UNESCO conference explores reparations

Basseterre, St. Kitts – (SKNIS): A two-day conference hosted by the St. Kitts and Nevis UNESCO National Commission and forming part of the commemoration of the 20th Anniversary of the Establishment of the UNESCO International Scientific Slave Route Project, has reopened the dialogue on the negro legacy, including the matter of reparations for the descendants of the enslaved.

CARICOM heads to continue pushing reparations agenda

When the CARICOM Heads of Government gather in Barbados early next month for the 36th Regular Meeting, they are expected to continue “fleshing out” the initiatives that have to be taken to push the reparations agenda forward.

This disclosure has come from Prime Minister Freundel Stuart, who acknowledged that progress was being made towards Reparations for Native Genocide and Slavery and that there was consensus across the region that leaders must go in that direction.

Int’l reparations conference ends on high note

NEW YORK, USA (CMC) — An international conference on reparations has ended here with a call for Caribbean governments to proceed urgently with the recommendation that the slave-owning and slave-trading European nations be invited to attend an inter-governmental reparatory justice summit in 2015.

In addition, delegates also agreed to organise two global reparations summits, the first in 2016 to be held in the Caribbean and another in 2017 in Europe.

Advocates to gather for historic Reparations Summit

SCORES OF reparations advocates, Pan-Africanists and social justice activists from the United States, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean will gather in New York City this week (April 9-12) for an historic Reparations Summit which will see the formal launch of the National African-American Reparations Commission (NAARC).
