I welcome you all to this Thirtieth Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government.

Special thanks are due to Prime Minister Barrow for hosting us in Belize in March and for his effective stewardship as Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government over the past six months.

THIRTIETH MEETING OF CARICOM HEADS OPENS IN GEORGETOWN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Thirtieth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) opens in Georgetown, Guyana on July 2, 2009 against the backdrop of the Twentieth Anniversary of the Grand Anse Declaration and Work Programme for the Advancement of the Integration Movement.

The Grand Anse declaration was signed in July 1989, in Grand Anse, Grenada.

REMARKS BY HIS EXCELLENCY EDWIN W. CARRINGTON, SECRETARY-GENERAL, CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), AT THE CONFERENCE ON YOUTH, CRIME AND VIOLENCE, 22 JUNE 2009, BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS AND NEVIS

I would like to begin these remarks by extending my appreciation to Honourable Prime Minister Douglas for organising this important consultation on Youth Crime and Violence in our society. This issue is central to the investigations being carried out by the Caribbean Commission on Youth Development (CCYD) appointed by the Conference of Heads of Government, which is due to complete its Report later this year.

TOURISM ON AGENDA AT HEADS OF GOVERNMENT MEETING

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Tourism, Agriculture, Services, Free Movement of Skills within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME), and Information and Communication Technology for Development (ICT4D) are among the major agenda items in the Economic Development cluster of the upcoming Thirtieth Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Last July, when CARICOM Heads of Government met here in Antigua and Barbuda, they endorsed my proposal to convene a Regional Symposium on Services to develop a Regional Policy and Strategy for the further development of the Services Sector.
