HERizon: CARICOM Women Shaping STEAM
HERizon is a transformative regional campaign led by the CGICT Partnership, designed to dismantle entrenched gender barriers in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) and ignite a new generation of female innovators across the Caribbean. By weaving together gender equity advocacy, digital skills development, and mentorship, HERizon creates a holistic ecosystem where girls and young women are not merely encouraged to participate in technology and innovation — they are equipped and empowered to lead.
At its core, HERizon challenges the cultural and systemic stereotypes that have long discouraged young women from entering technology-driven fields. It positions the Caribbean region as fertile ground for a new wave of female-led innovation, one that is inclusive, representative, and built for the future.
Background and Rationale
Across the Caribbean, girls and young women remain significantly underrepresented in STEAM disciplines and the digital economy. Despite strong academic performance at the secondary level, societal expectations, limited role models, and structural inequities continue to steer young women away from technology careers. The consequences are far-reaching: economies miss out on half of their talent pool, and young women lose access to some of the most dynamic and high-growth sectors of the modern workforce.
The CGICT Partnership, a collaborative body committed to advancing information and communications technology across Caribbean nations, recognizes this gap as both a social justice imperative and a strategic development priority. HERizon is the Partnership's flagship response: a multi-faceted campaign built on evidence, regional partnerships, and a deep understanding of the cultural landscape.
The name HERizon is intentional, blending "her" with "horizon" to signal limitless possibility for every girl who dares to look beyond the boundaries set for her. It is a statement of ambition and belonging.
Project Objectives
HERizon is guided by four interconnected strategic objectives:
1. Challenge Gender Stereotypes in STEAM
Through targeted awareness campaigns, community engagement, and media outreach, HERizon works to actively reframe public and institutional narratives around girls in STEAM. The campaign confronts the "not for me" myth, the deeply held belief that science and technology careers are masculine domains — by amplifying stories of Caribbean women who have broken through, and by creating new cultural reference points that resonate with younger audiences.
2. Boost Digital Literacy and Skills Development
HERizon delivers practical, accessible, and high-quality digital literacy programming tailored to the realities of Caribbean girls and young women. From foundational coding and computational thinking to data literacy, cybersecurity awareness, and digital entrepreneurship, the initiative ensures that participants leave with tangible, career-ready skills. Programmes are designed to meet learners where they are, whether in schools, community centers, or online platforms, ensuring broad and equitable reach.
3. Expand Mentorship Pathways
Representation matters, and mentorship is the bridge between aspiration and achievement. HERizon cultivates a robust regional network of mentors, professional women working across the technology and innovation ecosystem, who provide guidance, encouragement, and real-world insight to young participants. The campaign facilitates structured mentorship relationships, peer learning circles, and exposure events such as tech site visits, hackathons, and innovation showcases.
4. Inspire Girls and Young Women to Dream Big
Beyond skills and knowledge, HERizon is a movement of the imagination. The campaign deliberately cultivates a sense of possibility, encouraging young women across the region to envision themselves not just as participants in the digital economy, but as architects of it. Through storytelling, showcases, and celebration of female achievement in STEAM, HERizon plants the seeds of long-term career ambition.
Key Activities and Programme Components
HERizon's programme architecture is built around five core activity streams:
• Regional Awareness Campaign
A multi-platform communications campaign spanning social media, broadcast media, schools, and community events. Content is co-created with young women to ensure authenticity and resonance, featuring real stories of Caribbean female innovators and technologists.
• Digital Skills Bootcamps
Intensive, hands-on training programmes delivered in partnership with schools, universities, and community organizations across member territories. Bootcamps cover coding, data literacy, digital design, and emerging technology applications.
• HERizon Mentorship Network
A structured, region-wide mentorship programme connecting young women with established female professionals in STEAM fields. The network includes both face-to-face and virtual engagement modalities to ensure accessibility across the region.
• Innovation Challenges and Showcases
Competitive innovation challenges invite young women to develop and pitch technology solutions addressing real Caribbean challenges. Winners receive funding, incubation support, and regional visibility — turning inspiration into action.
• Policy and Institutional Advocacy
HERizon engages governments, educational institutions, and private sector partners to advance gender-responsive STEAM education policies, scholarship opportunities, and inclusive hiring practices across the region.
Expected Outcomes and Impact
By the end of the campaign period, HERizon aims to achieve the following outcomes:
• Measurable increase in girls' enrolment in STEAM subjects and tertiary programmes across participating territories
• Hundreds of young women completing digital literacy and skills development programmes with recognised credentials
• A thriving regional mentorship network connecting young women with technology professionals across the Caribbean
• Elevated public discourse on gender equity in STEAM, reflected in media coverage and institutional commitments
• A cohort of young female innovators who have launched technology projects or entrepreneurial ventures
• Strengthened regional partnerships between governments, educational institutions, civil society, and the private sector in advancing gender-inclusive digital development
Strategic Alignment
HERizon is strategically aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). It also supports the priorities of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) in advancing digital transformation and inclusive economic development across the region.
The campaign is deeply rooted in the CGICT Partnership's mandate to harness ICT as a catalyst for human development, equity, and regional competitiveness, ensuring that the Caribbean's digital future is one that works for everyone.
