STATEMENT BY THE HON. PATRICK MANNING, PRIME MINISTER, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AND CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAUNCH OF THE CARICOM SINGLE MARKET ON 01 JANUARY 2006

Today, 1st January 2006 the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) takes one of its most significant steps in the process of regional integration, as the CARICOM Single Market becomes a reality.

It is my privilege and honour that on this historic day I assume the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community until 30 June 2006 during which time Trinidad and Tobago will host the 17th Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Community on the 9th and 10th of February.

CARICOM Secretary-General Sends Condolence to The Bahamas

Carrington has expressed his deep sorrow and that of the staff of the Secretariat, to the Government and People of the Bahamas; in particular families who lost dear ones in the recent crash of a seaplane near Miami on Monday, 19 December 2005.

Statement by the Hon. K. D Knight, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Jamaica delivered at the 6th WTO Ministerial Conference, 13-18 December 2005, Hong Kong

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) We are all privileged to meet in this bustling and fascinating host city - Hong Kong. I congratulate the Chair of this Conference and his able team for all the logistical and administrative arrangements, which have made our stay here enjoyable despite the hectic schedule. Jamaica is committed to trade liberalisation and to the World Trade Organisation. We will continue to work towards a successful Doha Round. Yet there is cause for concern.

CARICOM MINISTERS PLUG CASE FOR SMALL, VULNERABLE STATES AT HONG KONG MINISTERIAL MEETING

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Sixth Ministerial Conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) got underway on Tuesday, 13 December in Hong Kong, with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Trade and Foreign Ministers calling attention to the negative effects likely to befall unsupported small and vulnerable economies in light of the erosion of preferences.

DOMINICA LAUNCHES CARICOM PASSPORT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Commonwealth of Dominica on Wednesday, 14 December became the fourth Member State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to launch its CARICOM passport. The official travel document, which bears the CARICOM logo and the words Caribbean Community on the cover, also carries the Coat of Arms and name of the issuing Member State.

CARICOM MINISTERS SPEAK OUT ON SUGAR, BANANA AT WTO MINISTERIAL MEETING

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica, Hon. K.D Knight has pledged his country’s ongoing commitment to trade liberalisation, but has expressed disappointment over the declining terms of trade and erosion of preferential treatment for Jamaica’s banana and sugar exports.
