Madame Chair

I would like first of all to thank the Government of Spain for hosting this International Conference on what is in reality the future of Haiti - its social and economic development. In providing this particular venue, La Casa de America, which is laden with symbolism, Spain has selected a location which is a worthy reflection of its increasingly key role in the development of the Caribbean region.

THEME:  KEEP THE PROMISE : STOP AIDS WITH A FOCUS ON 'ACCOUNTABILITY'
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Last year, the global community was confronted with a poignant call from the organizers of the World AIDS Day commemoration to “Keep the Promise: Stop AIDS”. This call found particular resonance in the Caribbean given the high prevalence and increasing incidence of the disease and the dire consequences for the development of the human and social capital.

Good morning and thank you for being here today. Our delegation is pleased to be with the people of Saint Lucia and to serve as observes in the December 11th General Elections.

Our presence on the island is at the invitation of the Prime Minister of Saint Lucia; our mandate comes from CARICOM Heads of State and Government who instructed that an observer mission be present for these elections.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The elections in Saint Lucia are over and the CARICOM Observer Mission congratulates the people of Saint Lucia in their conduct on Election Day. The people have spoken and soon the results of the poll will be made official.

CARICOM observers for Haiti elections

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A six member team from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will travel to Haiti on Saturday 4th February, to observe the first round of next Tuesday’s presidential and legislative elections.

The team will be headed by Jamaica’s former Director of Elections, Mr. Noel Lee, and will include observers from other Member States.

PANCAP-REGIONAL MEDIA CHAMPIONS DRAFT ACTION PLAN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Representatives of the regional media industry meeting at a conference to accelerate their role in reducing HIV and AIDS-related stigma and discrimination identified a number of challenges to their optimal involvement in the Region’s response to the epidemic.
