INTEGRATION NOT FOR THE FAINT OF HEART, SAYS SECRETARY-GENERAL CARRINGTON

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In spite of the expressed dissatisfaction with the pace of progress to achieve deeper integration, the Community must guard against divergence of opinion leading to diversion from achieving common goals, said H.E. Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

CARICOM INSTITUTIONS IN WORKSHOP SESSIONS PRIOR TO MEETING WITH SECRETARY-GENERAL

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown Guyana) Officials of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Institutions attending the first set of sectoral cluster workshops prior to a forum with H.E. Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of CARICOM at the CARICOM Secretariat, have called for greater levels of interaction among stakeholders to address the use of natural resources and climate change, especially energy, water and land.

CARICOM Competition Commission Chairman Attends Geneva Forum

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Dr Kusha Haraksingh, Chairman of the CARICOM Competition Commission has been attending, since Tuesday 15 July, at the invitation of the Secretary General of UNCTAD, the 9th session of the Intergovernmental Group of Experts on Competition Law and Policy in Geneva.

CARICOM REGIONAL INSTITUTIONS HEADS MEET FOR THE SECOND TIME IN GUYANA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown Guyana) Following a successful historic meeting of Heads of Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Regional Institutions in 2007, the CARICOM Secretary-General, His Excellency Edwin W Carrington will again facilitate a second meeting of these institutions on 30 -31 July 2008 at the CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Georgetown, Guyana.

CARIFESTA CHILD-ART COMPETITION LAUNCHED

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The inaugural (Caribbean Festival of Arts) CARIFESTA X Child Art Competition was launched in Guyana on 16 July 2008 at the Umana Yana with an exhibition that exemplified the meaningful contribution young people could make to the visual arts in future CARIFESTAs.

In his remarks, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Dr. Frank Anthony said that the aim of the activity was to create a space for the youth to actively participate in CARIFESTA X.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Friday, 13 July 2007 will live on in our memory at the CARICOM Secretariat as a very dark day. That was the day when a light in our lives went out. Yvonne Holder, our dear colleague and friend, was a most vibrant and beautiful figure, synonymous with light, with calm, with serenity, and with optimism. She brought a positive aura into any group or event. Her smile was ever present, ever infectious. Today, one week after that fateful day, I find it difficult, almost incongruous, to refer to her in the past tense.

CARICOM CONGRATULATES HIS EXCELLENCY NELSON MANDELA ON NINETIETH BIRTHDAY

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) has extended congratulations and best wishes to H.E. Mr. Nelson R. Mandela, former President of South Africa, who celebrated his ninetieth birthday on 18 July 2008.

The congratulatory message was extended to the former President, by the Hon. Baldwin W. Spencer, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda and Chairman of the Conference of Heads of Government of CARICOM.

Agriculture recognised as vital to CARICOM Economic Development

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Single Market Advisor with the CARICOM Secretariat, Ms Desiree Field Ridley has cited Agriculture as one of the Community’s critical responses to the global challenges now impacting the Region’s economic well-being.
