CARICOM MINISTERS OF HEALTH AGREE ON A PLAN TO ESTABLISH CARPHA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Ministers of Health of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have endorsed a plan of action for the transition of the Regional Health Institutions into the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) by 2010. The endorsement was made at the annual Caucus of the Ministers of Health held in Washington DC, USA on the eve of the PAHO Directing Council which began in Washington DC on 29 September.

CARICOM, AUSTRIA SIGN CO-OPERATION MOU

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Edwin Carrington and the Secretary of State in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria, Mr Hans Winkler, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on CARICOM-Austria Co-operation on Saturday 27 September in New York, USA. The major areas of focus of the MOU will be disaster management and alternative energy.

CARICOM SECRETARIAT COORDINATES RELIEF EFFORT FOR HAITI

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) In an effort to provide aid to storm-ravaged Haiti, as it recovers from four consecutive storms that have left a huge death toll and thousands displaced, the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat organised a humanitarian drive.

SECRETARY-GENERAL TOURS GONAIVES DURING HAITI VISIT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Edwin Carrington completed a two day visit to Haiti on Wednesday 24 September with a visit to Gonaives and Porte du Paix, two of the areas hardest hit during the recent multiple-storm assault on the country.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL HEADS OFF ON SEVERAL MISSIONS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, His Excellency Edwin Carrington left Guyana on Friday 19 September to fulfil a hectic round of engagements in the Community and the wider world.

Mr Carrington’s first stop is Belize where he will attend ceremonies marking the 27th Anniversary of that country’s independence on 21 September and hold discussions with Prime Minister, the Honourable Dean Barrow.

When I was given this assignment yesterday, I assumed that, despite the title, I would be expected to take into account financial market developments in other areas of the world besides the USA. My presentation will therefore take the following form:

• Origins of the Crisis

• The Meltdown and Regulatory Response

• Global Contagion Effect and Recession Tendencies; and

• Impact on the Caribbean’s Financial and Non-Financial Sectors.

ORIGINS OF THE CRISIS

CARICOM RALLYING TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Technical assistance, relief supplies and financial resources are being provided by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to the countries affected by the disastrous events of the ongoing Atlantic hurricane season.

The Caribbean Disaster Emergency Response Agency (CDERA) has mobilized its resources and is helping in the assessment of the damage and the provision of relief. A needs list is also being developed to determine further needs of the affected countries.
