CARICOM MAKING PROGRESS IN DRUG DEMAND REDUCTION

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Member States are reporting progress in their efforts to reduce the demand for illicit drugs in the Region.

Based on the ten Country reports presented yesterday (3 March) at the regional training workshop on Standards of Care for Treatment and Rehabilitation Facilities for Substance Abusers, in Jamaica, several countries have varying types of care and treatment methods for drug and alcoholic dependents.

PRODUCE INCREASING SHARE OF FOOD CONSUMED - ASG URGES REGION

 
(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  His Excellency Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Assistant Secretary-General, Trade and Economic Integration, said Wednesday that there was a greater need for the Caribbean region to produce an increasing share of the food it consumed.

BARBADOS ELECTED TO CHAIR CASSOS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Mr. Anthony Archer, Director, Civil Aviation, Barbados, and outgoing Acting Chairman of the Regional Aviation Safety Oversight System (RASOS) was Wednesday elected Chairperson of the Caribbean Aviation Safety and Security Oversight System (CASSOS).

Mr. Ramesh Lutchmedial, Director General, Civil Aviation of Trinidad and Tobago, was elected Vice Chairperson.

CARIBBEAN PLANT HEALTH DIRECTORS DISCUSS MEASURES TO GUARD AGAINST PLANT PESTS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Senior Plant Health Officials from across the Caribbean are seeking to guard against the threat of plant pests.

They will hold a second meeting on the issue on 4-5 March, 2009 at the Headquarters of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat in Guyana as they continue to mobilise their efforts towards the formulation of policy, programmes and projects to combat the threat in the Caribbean.

WANTED: REGIONAL POLICIES ON DRUG CARE AND TREATMENT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The need for the development of evidence-based policies on drug treatment and care in the Caribbean Region was one of the main issues raised at the start of the regional training workshop on Standards of Care for Treatment and Rehabilitation Facilities for Substance Abusers.

ICTs CAN PROVIDE ECONOMIC BENEFITS FOR CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have been urged to use Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) as a driver for economic survival as one means of combating the global economic down turn.

This encouragement came from Senator Ann Peters, Minister of State in the Ministry of Health of Grenada when she addressed the opening ceremony for the 3rd Meeting of the Regional ICT Steering Committee in Grenada on Tuesday March 3rd.
