CARICOM/JAPAN TO HOLD THIRTEENTH CONSULTATIONS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Thirteenth CARICOM-Japan Consultations on technical cooperation will convene in Barbados on 19-20 March 2009 and are expected to cover both technical and political issues of mutual interest.

COTA LAUNCHES SECOND ESSAY COMPETITION FOR STUDENTS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)  The Caribbean Organisation of Tax Administrators (COTA) has launched its second essay competition for secondary school students throughout the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) aimed in part at stimulating broad interest in taxation matters.

The topic is `Building Efficient Tax Administrations in Promoting National and Regional Development’.

BELIZE BECOMES TWELFTH MEMBER STATE TO ISSUE CARICOM PASSPORT BELIZE BECOMES TWELFTH MEMBER STATE TO ISSUE CARICOM PASSPORT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) All twelve Member States participating in the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) are now issuing the CARICOM passport.

This week Belize became the twelfth CARICOM Member State to introduce the document during a ceremony held in the capital of Belmopan.

A CARICOM passport, which features the CARICOM logo and the words “Caribbean Community” printed on the cover, is a National passport which is issued in accordance with agreed common colours and format for intra-regional and extra-regional travel.

COMMUNITY ISSUES TO BE RAISED AT TOWN HALL MEETING

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A wide cross-section of Belizeans is expected to participate in a Town Hall Meeting Saturday 14 March 2009 at the Sacred Heart Secondary School, San Ignacio, Belize, to discuss the benefits of integration including the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

His Excellency Edwin Carrington, Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM, will lead a delegation to the Town Hall Meeting that will place emphasis on the opportunities available under the CSME and within the Community in general.

REGIONAL STRATEGY TO COMBAT GLOBAL CRISIS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will pursue a regional strategy to minimize the impact of the global financial and economic crisis and is to seek greater access to funds from the International Financial Institutions (IFIs) to confront the challenges that face Caribbean economies.

PM BARROW CONFIDENT IN STRENGTH OF CARICOM

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) wrapped up their Twentieth Intersessional Meeting in Belize City, Belize, on Friday evening with host Prime Minister, the Hon. Dean Barrow expressing confidence in the strength of the Community and the political will exhibited to overcome difficulties to reach the “glorious destiny of Caribbean integration.”
