It is a pleasure for me as Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community to join the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Barbados in welcoming you all and to make the following brief remarks at the opening of this highly significant Twenty-Eighth Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) of the Caribbean Community.

CARICOM MEMBER STATES ARE RIPE FOR INVESTMENTS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) His Excellency Edwin Carrington told a business forum in Mexico that with a functioning Single Market and a population of approximately 15 million, the Region stands ready to welcome business enterprises.

28TH COTED COULD INFLUENCE COMMUNITY’S FUTURE

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Twenty-Eighth Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) opened in Bridgetown, Barbados, Thursday morning with a weighty agenda that included the consideration of the Report of the Audit on the CARICOM Single Market, and the improvement of practices related to approving suspensions of the Common External Tariff (CET).

CARICOM WELCOMES CONTINUED SUPPORT FROM CANADA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM), the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and the Government of Barbados on Thursday signed an amendment to the CIDA-funded Contribution Agreement for the CARICOM Trade and Competitiveness Programme.

The brief ceremony was held at the Accra Beach Hotel and Resort, Christ Church, Barbados.

MAKE GENDER A REGIONAL PRIORITY, CARICOM ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General Dr Edward Greene has underscored the need for gender issues to become priority on the regional agenda.

Addressing the Fifth Meeting of the Bureau of Women’s / Gender Affairs in Georgetown on Tuesday, Dr Greene who has responsibility for Human and Social Development in the CARICOM Secretariat said women were among the most vulnerable to the global economic crisis.

CARICOM ASSISTANT SECRETARY-GENERAL APPEALS TO WOMEN’S BUREAU TO ADDRESS SOCIAL ALIENATION OF MEN

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Assistant Secretary-General for Human and Social Development, Dr. Edward Greene wants more attention paid to the social alienation of men.

Dr. Greene told stakeholders attending the Fifth Meeting of the Bureau of Women’s/Gender Affairs in Georgetown, Guyana, which started on Tuesday, that gender relations should not be perceived in the context of women’s issues only, but women’s issues as they related to the issues of males.

CSME CONVOCATION GETS UNDERWAY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) At least five Heads of Government will attend the Convocation on the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME) which will be held in Bridgetown, Barbados on Friday 9 and Saturday 10 October.
