STATEMENT BY THE HON. PATRICK MANNING, PRIME MINISTER, TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO AND CHAIRMAN OF THE CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM), ON THE OCCASION OF THE LAUNCH OF THE CARICOM SINGLE MARKET ON 01 JANUARY 2006

Today, 1st January 2006 the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) takes one of its most significant steps in the process of regional integration, as the CARICOM Single Market becomes a reality.

It is my privilege and honour that on this historic day I assume the chairmanship of the Caribbean Community until 30 June 2006 during which time Trinidad and Tobago will host the 17th Inter-Sessional Meeting of the Heads of Government of the Community on the 9th and 10th of February.

My delegation deeply appreciates your hospitality and the efficient logistical arrangements which you have provided.

Statement by the Hon. K. D Knight, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Jamaica delivered at the 6th WTO Ministerial Conference, 13-18 December 2005, Hong Kong

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) We are all privileged to meet in this bustling and fascinating host city - Hong Kong. I congratulate the Chair of this Conference and his able team for all the logistical and administrative arrangements, which have made our stay here enjoyable despite the hectic schedule. Jamaica is committed to trade liberalisation and to the World Trade Organisation. We will continue to work towards a successful Doha Round. Yet there is cause for concern.

DOMINICA LAUNCHES CARICOM PASSPORT

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) The Commonwealth of Dominica on Wednesday, 14 December became the fourth Member State of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) to launch its CARICOM passport. The official travel document, which bears the CARICOM logo and the words Caribbean Community on the cover, also carries the Coat of Arms and name of the issuing Member State.

The Barbados Delegation thanks you and the Government of Hong Kong for the warm welcome offered. We have confidence in your capacity to steer the Conference to a positive outcome. We also wish to congratulate Mr. Pascal Lamy on his appointment as the fifth Director General of the World Trade Organisation.

CARICOM FINANCE MINISTERS MEET IN JAMAICA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) With three weeks to go before the launch of the CARICOM Single Market on 1 January 2006, Finance Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will meet in Kingston, Jamaica on Monday 12 December to finalise plans for the operation of a critical element of the Single Market.

STATEMENT ISSUED AT THE CONCLUSION OF THE ELEVENTH SPECIAL MEETING OF THE CONFERENCE OF HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY ON THE STATUS OF THE CARICOM SINGLE MARKET AND ECONOMY (CSME) , 7 DECEMBER 2005, BRIDGETOWN, BARBADOS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown)The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) at their Eleventh Special Meeting held at the Sherbourne Centre, Barbados, 7th December 2005, considered the finalisation of the arrangements for the launch of the CARICOM Single Market. The Heads of Government reaffirmed their decision that the Single Market will come into force on 1 January 2006.

CARICOM YOUTH AMBASSADORS DEVISE HIV/AIDS STRATEGIES WITH RURAL COMMUNITIES OF GUYANA

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) A number of strategies geared to increase awareness, training and the capacity strengthening of several communities within one of Guyana’s remote regions have been mapped out by Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Youth Ambassadors (CYAs) during their recent trip to the Iwokrama Conservation and Development Reserve.
