UN urges Dominican Republic to ensure citizens of Haitian origin do not lose nationality

GENEVA, Switzerland, CMC - The United Nations human rights office has urged the Dominican Republic to take all necessary measures to ensure that citizens of Haitian origin are not deprived of their right to nationality in light of a recent court ruling.
Last week the country’s Constitutional Court ruled that the children of undocumented migrants who have been in the Dominican Republic and registered as Dominicans as far back as 1929, cannot have Dominican nationality as their parents are considered to be “in transit”.

Trinidadian scholar killed in Kenya buried in his homeland

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – 31-year-old Ravindra Ramrattan was cremated here on Tuesday, more than a week after he was murdered during the attack on the Westgate Shopping Mall in Niarobi by Shabab militants. At least 68 other people were killed during the attack.
President Anthony Carmona led the dignitaries, including several government ministers as well as relatives, who attended the funeral service for the Trinidadian, who was employed as a research economist in the African country.

President-elect Savarin defends his election

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC - President-elect Charles Savarin has defended his election even as Opposition Leader Hector John said he would snub the head of state and boycott all functions officiated by him.
Savarin, 70, who is expected to be sworn in to office later this week, was elected by the Dominica parliament by a 19-0 margin after opposition legislators boycotted the event on Monday.

Caribbean hoping to take advantage of German Food Show

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados-based Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) says it will mount a “Caribbean Kitchen Pavilion” at this year’s ANUGA Food Show in Germany.
It said the October 5-9 event would allow the region to showcase 12 Caribbean food suppliers from seven different countries, displaying a range of beverages, condiments and selected items.

Opposition criticises government over crime, figures show increase in murders

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – The main opposition Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has criticised the Portia Simpson Miller administration over its handling of the crime situation in Jamaica as the island recorded yet another increase in murders.
Opposition spokesman on National Security, Delroy Chuck, wants the government to take decisive action to deal with the situation.

Chinese company to build thousands of middle-income houses

Social Development and Housing Minister Delma Thomas has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Chinese real estate, construction and development company, Gao Zhen.
