Montserrat signs new agreement to regulate maritime industry

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC - Montserrat has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the United Kingdom Department for Transport (DfT) as it seeks to put in place international standards for the regulation of the maritime industry.
Montserrat is a member of the British Red Ensign Group and operates as a Category Two Red Ensign (British) Registry, registering ships of up to 150 gross tons (GRT) and pleasure vessels of up to 400 GRT.

Government presents budget reducing subsidies on basic food commodities

CASTRIES, St. Lucia, CMC – The St. Lucia government has presented an EC$1.32 billion (One EC dollar = US$0.37 cents) budget to Parliament late Tuesday reducing the subsidies on basic food commodities such as rice and flour and increasing the Value Added Tax (VAT) for the hotel industry.
Prime Minister Dr. Kenny Anthony told legislators that the budget, which he described as “realistic” and meeting the socio-economic challenges of the country “head on”, represents a nine per cent reduction in expenditure over the 2012-13 fiscal year.

US-based university to help develop local agricultural sector

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Jamaica says it will receive assistance from a university in the United States to develop the research capacity of the local agricultural sector.
Agriculture Minister Roger Clarke said a delegation from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University has arrived here for talks with various stakeholders and institutions, in order to familiarize themselves with existing infrastructure and provisions, to determine how best they can assist.

EU supporting regional food security project

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC - The European Union is providing an Euro 8.6 million (One Euro = US$1.29) grant to support a project to improve Caribbean food security in the context of climate change. The project is being conducted in Belize, Barbados, St. Kitts and Nevis and Trinidad and Tobago and is being organized by the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute (CARDI). The project is being discussed at a two-day conference that ends here Wednesday.

Jamaica uncovers scheme involving Trinidad and Tobago products

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - Jamaica has imposed additional duties on lube oil product from Trinidad and Tobago, accusing the oil rich twin island republic of engaging in a scheme to circumvent the rules of origin in the Treaty of Chaguaramas, governing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).
Industry, Investment and Commerce Minister Anthony Hylton told parliament the scheme was brought to the attention of the Portia Simpson Miller administration by the private sector.

Rum fight will not be ours says Ambassador Colin Murdoch

St. John’s Antigua- One trade dispute before the World Trade Organization (WTO) is enough for Antigua & Barbuda; the nation will not be party to the escalating rum row brewing between regional distributors and the US.
This revelation is coming from OECS Commissioner, Ambassador Colin Murdoch.
“No, Antigua & Barbuda is not (a party). It is only two or three countries that are going forward with the matter formally. We have one case going forward at the moment, so we have our hands full,” Murdoch said in an interview with OBSERVER media.

CAL to discuss route cut with Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica - The state-owned Caribbean Airlines (CAL) recorded losses estimated at US$70 million last year, Finance Minister Larry Howai has said.
He told the Senate on Tuesday that the figure does not include the US$40 million in fuel subsidy to the airline, even though he insists that the airline remains solvent.
But Opposition legislator Dr Lester Henry said he was "astounded that the minister could describe as solvent a company which cannot cover its costs and (has) no money in the bank".
