Contractor apologises for destruction of Maya archaeological site

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC - The man at the center of the destruction of a Maya archaeological site in northern Belize, Denny Grijalva, has expressed regret at the razing of the Noh Mul monument and has launched an internal investigation into the incident.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Grijalva said he is “committed to fully cooperate with the authorities in their investigation into this regrettable incident.”

US lobbies Caribbean for position on IACHR

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – The United States candidate for the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR), Professor James L. Cavallaro, has held talks with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) seeking support for his candidacy.
CARICOM foreign ministers met here earlier this week under the chairmanship of Trinidad and Tobago’s foreign minister Winston Dookeran.

CAL VP Jaikaran treated in NY for heart problems

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - Vice-chairman of Caribbean Airlines (CAL) and WinTV executive chairman Mohan Jaikaran was hospitalised in New York, USA, following “heart complications.”
Sunil Ramdeen, WinTV’s general manger, confirmed that Jaikaran had complications relating to his heart but he is now at his New York-based home.
Ramdeen explained that Jaikaran had heart issues for some time—he suffered a stroke last year and underwent triple by-pass surgery earlier this year.

CAL board’s wings clipped

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - The wings of Caribbean Airlines’ board have been “clipped” and a new board is on the horizon, expected to be announced shortly, government officials said yesterday.
The development is now in the works after yesterday’s weekly Cabinet meeting, they added. The new board is tipped to include certain business and professional people.

CSA chief: Corruption impeding regional shipping

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad - President of the Caribbean Shipping Association (CSA ) Grantley Stephenson says corruption in international trade is impeding growth of the region’s maritime business. Speaking at Monday’s opening of the 12th Caribbean Shipping Executives Conference in Freeport, Bahamas, Stephenson said: “The association has previously addressed issues related to smuggling of narcotics and through earlier contacts with the Maritime Security Council has been concerned about piracy.

Prime Minister fails to keep election promise says opposition

"Not only is this far from the truth but also that Dr. Anthony’s statement may well have been cleverly designed to lower the expectations of the people of Saint Lucia on the prospects of job creation by his government," says LPM Leader Theorld Prudent.

IMF says financial position stronger than ever

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts, CMC – The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says the economy of St. Kitts and Nevis is projected to recover and grow by two percent in 2013 and that despite a challenging economic environment, the overall fiscal position through end-March 2013 was stronger than expected.
The IMF issued a statement on Thursday following an April 20th to May 15th visit by an IMF mission to review recent economic developments and programme performance at the end of March, to assess progress in structural reforms and discuss economic policies and the outlook for 2013 and beyond.

Britain to continue funding geothermal project

BRADES, Montserrat, CMC - The United Kingdom says it is committed to the development of geothermal energy in Montserrat as the British Overseas Territory announced it will soon test a well to determine its capacity to generate geothermal energy.
