(Trinidad Express) Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar pointed to the relationship between criminal deportees and increased crime and violence in Trinidad and Tobago and the rest of the Caribbean in yesterday’s discussions with United States Vice-President Joe Biden.
The Prime Minister noted that one of the major problems being experienced was that many of the criminal deportees would have left the region prior to adulthood and do not have ties to the countries to which they have been deported.
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua, CMC – The Caribbean Ombudsman Association (CAROA) says it will seek recognition from the 15-member Caribbean Community (CARICOM) grouping given the significant role of the office of ombudsman in the region.
CAROA held its seventh biennial conference in Sint Maarten and the move to seek CARICOM recognition was among six “key points” outlined in the communiqué issued after the meeting.
BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados government has welcomed the agreement signed by Foursquare Rum Distillery to distill, blend and bottle a brand of rum known as “10 Cane’ which officials say is expected to rake in BDS$100 million (One Barbados dollar = US$0.50 cents) in foreign exchange.
“Rum is a distinct Barbadian product and I believe that we are the home of rum, and that is something that I don’t think we have fully capitalised on as yet.
ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer will be the first of a number of Caribbean leaders to have bilateral talks with China’s new President Xi Jinping on June 1.
President Xi’s meeting with the prime minister, will take place during his (President Xi’s) state visit to Trinidad & Tobago from May 31 to June 2.
In a brief statement from local officials, it was said the meeting was arranged shortly after President Xi was elected in March.
KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says the Bolivarian Alliance for Our Americas (ALBA) Bank is making available a US$40 million loan to St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Gonsalves told legislators that a delegation from the bank had been here and that the money would be used for the completion of the international airport at Agyle.
Gonsalves later told the Caribbean Media Corporation (CMC) that the loan would be for 22 years with a two year grace period.
ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, CMC – The Grenada parliament has approved an amendment to existing terrorism legislation so to confiscate the assets of anyone once the Attorney General is of the belief the asset was gain through terrorist activities.
Previously, law enforcement authorities had to prove that the asset was directly link to a terrorist group or gain through the group.
(Trinidad Express) Local banks are on track to being compliant with US tax legislation, the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA), by next year’s deadline, Bankers’ Association president David Dulal-Whiteway said yesterday.
FATCA was enacted in the US Congress in 2010 and is part of that country’s effort to combat tax evasion by US citizens holding overseas investments.
