The PetroCaribe Economic Zone proposal

GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Guyana is reportedly examining a proposal to set up a PetroCaribe Economic Zone (PEZ), made by Venezuela at the PetroCaribe summit held earlier this month in Caracas and attended by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. According to Venezuelan Oil and Mining Minister Rafael Ramírez, this initiative will widen the role of PetroCaribe beyond the provision of oil at favourable prices, allowing inter alia for the strengthening of fair trade mechanisms among participating countries.

Barbados ‘cut off’ due to economic development

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler has expressed concern that the economic development of Barbados and other small open economies has been used as a “bludgeoning instrument” against them when it comes to concessional financing from entities like the World Bank and preferential access to markets internationally. Jamaica creates FATCA intermediary

KINGSTON, Jamaica - Jamaica plans to set up a central authority led by the central bank to report on the financial activities of US taxpayers to their government, which has been on a three-year campaign to track down tax cheats.
Its the latest move by the Jamaican Government to assist local institutions to comply with a new US hegemonic tax act called the Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act (FATCA). It requires local financial institutions to disclose information to the US government or face a 30 per cent penalty on income.

UN anti-cholera plan in Haiti ‘failing’

UN efforts to tackle cholera in Haiti are "almost non-existent", a charity says, as the world body faces court action for inadvertently starting a cholera epidemic in the country.
Late last year, the UN launched a $2.2bn-appeal (£1.5bn) to improve water supplies in Haiti.
But Medecins Sans Frontieres says this has had almost no practical effect.

China’s President to meet with Caribbean leaders

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC ) — China's President Xi Jingping arrives here today for a three-day visit during which time he will meet with Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders.
The visit follows that of the United States Vice-President Joe Biden earlier this week and according to a Chinese Embassy statement it is to "further increase political trust and consolidate friendship and co-operation with the entire region".

PM Gonsalves wants 90-minute talks with Trinidad PM on fuel subsidy

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, CMC – Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves says he has requested a 90-minute meeting with his Trinidadian counterpart, Kamla Persad Bissessar, next month to discuss the Caribbean Air Navigation and Advisory Services (CANAS) and regional airline, LIAT. Gonsalves said when he was in Port of Spain on Tuesday for talks with United States Vice President Joe Biden “I spoke to the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago and I suggested to her that when we have the Heads of Government meeting in July, I asked her if she could put aside about 90 minutes (so) that we can talk”.

Cuba to host Caribbean Film Market
