Dominica re-emphasises importance of developing geothermal energy sector

ROSEAU, Dominica, CMC – The Dominica government Monday re-emphasised the importance of developing the island’s geothermal energy sector as the Independent Regulatory Commission (IRC) granted the island’s lone electricity supplier with two new 25 year licences.
Public Works, Energy and Ports Minister Rayburn Blackmoore said Dominica, like many other Caribbean countries, do not have natural gas or proven oil.

Jamaica Facing Possible Currency Crisis

KINGSTON, Jamaica - A country enters a currency crisis if its exchange rate depreciates by more than 25 per cent in a given year. So far this year, the Jamaican dollar has depreciated approximately 12 per cent, moving from J$93 to US$1 in January to roughly J$104 to US$1 at the moment.
The last time the Jamaican dollar had such a significant depreciation was in 2008, when the exchange rate fell by 11 per cent from $71.59 to US$1 in January to J$80.21 to US$1 in December.

Education official hopeful OECS strategy will cater to special needs

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – Director of Education Jacintha Pringle is hoping that the OECS Education Sector Strategy (OESS) to be launched here next week will include special provisions for children with special needs.
Speaking at the official launch of a week of activities to mark Special Education Week, Pringle said “adequate structures should be in place for students who fall in this category.
“Children who are having particular difficulties in one area or another must be given extra assistance or different lessons to help them to succeed,” the director of education said.

Making Caribbean Agriculture Climate Smart’ book launched in Guyana

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC -- Two leading agricultural organisations have launched a book on agriculture in a climate-change Caribbean environment, as a leading agriculturalist warned that global climate change is one of the most serious threats to sustainable development in the region.
The publication, “Making Caribbean Agriculture Climate Smart”, was launched during the Joint Technical Opening of Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) on Sunday.

Fenton: PAHO/WHO support vital to region

KINGSTON, Jamaica - HEALTH Minister Dr Fenton Ferguson has lauded the Pan American Health OrganiSation and the World Health Organisation (PAHO/WHO) for reaffirming their support to the Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries as they work to confront health challenges.
Addressing the 25th Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD) at PAHO headquarters in Washington DC last week, Minister Fenton said the support from the organisations is vital to the region continuing to provide the necessary health services to combat certain diseases.

Developed countries criticised over failure to transfer technology

GEORGETOWN, Guyana, CMC - Guyana’s Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, has criticised the world’s rich countries over their failure to transfer to developing nations the technology needed to fast track their development.
Ramsammy said their failure has led to developing countries being unable to meet Millennium Development Goal (MDG) number 8.
