CARICOM SUPPORT FOR STRENGTHENING DEMOCRACY IN HAITI : STATEMENT ISSUED AT THE EIGHT MEETING OF THE COMMUNITY COUNCIL OF MINISTERS, 14 JUNE 2001, KINGSTON, JAMAICA

The Member States of the Caribbean Community have followed with continued interest, the evolution of the political crisis in Haiti. They did so against the background of the Region's continued concern about the political crisis in that country and the impact of that crisis on the Haitian people, whose democratic, social and economic aspirations it holds dear.

CARICOM SG AND TEAM COMPLETE CCJ PUBLIC EDUCATION ACTIVITIES IN JAMAICA

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community Mr Edwin Carrington, has wrapped up a one-week tour of Jamaica where he spoke to wide ranging audiences on a range of issues related to the Caribbean Court of Justice. The week of public education activities on the Court ran from 24-30 April 2001.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL IN JAMAICA FOR CCJ PUBLIC EDUCATION PROGRAMME

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community, Mr Edwin Carrington, has re-emphasised that establishment of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) is imperative to the creation of the CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME).

The Secretary-General, who is in Jamaica for a week long series of public education programmes, 24-30 April 2001 to build public awareness of the CCJ, stressed that dialogue with the people of the Region, including the stakeholders, is a fundamental step leading to the establishment of the Court.

STATEMENT ON THE GUYANA-VENEZUELA RELATIONS ISSUED BY THE HEADS OF GOVERNMENT OF THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) AND CANADA AT THEIR SIXTH SUMMIT MEETING IN MONTEGO BAY, JAMAICA, 19 JANUARY 2001.

Heads of Government of CARICOM and CANADA, at their Sixth Summit Meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica on January 19, 2001, were briefed by the Government of Guyana on the controversy between Guyana and Venezuela.

The Heads of Government noted that the Government of Venezuela continued to make claims to Guyana's territory.

As someone associated with the development of the Single Market and Economy, I most excitedly welcome the publication of the Caribbean Trade and Investment Report 2000. Empirical research has to be the foundation of meaningful policy-making, especially in our rapidly changing regional, hemispheric and global environment, and it is in that regard that this publication will contribute immensely to informing our deliberations on the deepening of the integration process.

PRESS RELEASE ISSUED ON CONCLUSION OF MEETING BETWEEN THE CARIBBEAN COMMUNITY (CARICOM) AND THE SOUTHERN AFRICAN DEVELOPMENT COMMUNITY (SADC), 17-18 APRIL, 2000 KINGSTON, JAMAICA

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) took a step towards close r cooperation when high level officials from the two regional groupings met in Kingston, Jamaica on 17-18 April, 2000. The Delegations of both CARICOM and SADC included representatives from their respective Member States.

STATEMENT BY THE RT. HON. P.J. PATTERSON, PRIME MINISTER OF JAMAICA, ON THE PASSING OF THE LATE HON. WILLIAM DEMAS, O.C.C.

All Jamaica and the Caribbean mourn the passing of Honourable William Demas, O.C.C., on Saturday last in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad and Tobago.

The late William Demas had already reached the highest echelons of official service in Trinidad and Tobago, when he embarked on the wider mission of the drive for Caribbean integration.

He was at one and the same time a propeller and an anchor for every meaningful advance in the process of regional integration.

TRAINING FOR CARICOM SECONDARY SCHOOL SPANISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana)  The University of the West Indies will host the Sixth annual workshop for Secondary School Spanish Language teachers drawn from the Caribbean Community Education system starting 10 August 1998 at Mona Campus, Jamaica.

The five-day training programme is geared towards enhancing the teaching skills of Spanish as a foreign language as participants will be exposed to modern teaching methods. The training exercise will be conducted by staff of the Department of Education of the University of Chile.

STATEMENT BY THE RT. HON. P.J. PATTERSON, PRIME MINISTER OF JAMAICA AND MEMBER, CARICOM BUREAU, ON CONSULTATIONS IN GUYANA, MAY 29-30, 1998

I have paid a short visit to Guyana as a member of the CARICOM Bureau on the eve of the release of the findings of the Audit Team and in continuation of the efforts of the Community to foster understanding, mutual trust and harmony in this country.

During my visit I held consultative meetings with the various political leaders and other political representatives, private sector leaders, representatives of the trade unions and the religious community as well as media bosses and heads.

These consultations were extremely useful and informative.
