CARICOM FINANCE MINISTERS MEET IN JAMAICA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) With three weeks to go before the launch of the CARICOM Single Market on 1 January 2006, Finance Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) will meet in Kingston, Jamaica on Monday 12 December to finalise plans for the operation of a critical element of the Single Market.

CARICOM HEADS OF GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION LEADERS AGREE ON THE WAY FORWARD

(Caribbean Community Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Parliamentary Opposition Leaders have agreed to set up a six-member team to follow up on issues arising from their recent historic meeting in Saint Lucia and also to map the path for the way ahead.

The team will comprise three representatives on each side. The Opposition Leaders of Jamaica, Dominica and Guyana will make up the Opposition team while CARICOM Heads of Government are expected to decide on the composition of their team in due course.

CARICOM SECRETARY-GENERAL HAILS ASAFA POWELL’S VICTORY

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) CARICOM Secretary-General His Excellency Edwin Carrington says the entire Caribbean is proud of Jamaican sprinter Asafa Powell for his recent world record-breaking 100-metre run of 9.77 seconds in Athens, Greece.

The formal opening of the Headquarters of the Community in this rich and diverse land is a particularly touching occasion for me personally. I had to be here. I am honoured that I have the privilege to speak to this august gathering.

It is a moment filled with nostalgia but I must resist the temptation simply to indulge in fond reminiscence.

PRIVY COUNCIL RULES ON JAMAICA’S LEGISLATION ON THE CCJ

(CARICOM Secretariat, Georgetown, Guyana) The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has today learnt of the ruling by the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council that the legislation, passed by the Jamaican Parliament to establish the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) in that country, is unconstitutional and void.

Dr. Rattray was both an accomplished diplomat and an eminent jurist who combined in a formidable mix, the skills and qualities of both professions in representing the interests of Jamaica, as well as the CARICOM Region.
