Jamaica to Tax Bank Withdrawals

amaica’s government is planning a new measure that would impose a levy on withdrawals from banks.

Part of a revenue-raising scheme for a government that continues to be in a serious debt situation, the levy “will be chargeable on all withdrawals from deposit-taking institutions by way of electronic banking, point of sale transactions, cheques, automated banking machine (ABM), automated teller machine (ATM), or over the counter and internet transfers,” according to Finance Minister Dr Peter Phillips.

CARICOM officials to discuss Consumer Protection

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The CARICOM Rapid Alert System for Information Exchange on Dangerous Goods (CARREX) will be the focus of   the Seventh Meeting of Consumer Affairs, in Jamaica on 24 – 25 April 2014.   CARREX is part of a CARICOM Secretariat project, funded by the European Union under the Tenth European Development Fund (EDF); and is intended to boost consumer protection and confidence and to improve the quality of products entering and trading on the regional market.

Caribbean answering the global call to end stigma and discrimination

KINGSTON, Jamaica (UNAIDS) -- The Caribbean response to HIV has known many successes in recent years. Since 2001 there has been a 54% decline in AIDS-related deaths while new HIV infections have dropped by 49%. Twenty times more people are accessing HIV treatment now than there were ten years ago. And several countries are on track to virtually eliminate new HIV infections among children by 2015.

Regional HIV Consultation identifies steps to eliminate stigma and discrimination

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     After two days of dialogue, more than 75 delegates, representing Caribbean countries, regional institutions and development partners of the Pan Caribbean Partnership against HIV and AIDS (PANCAP), arrived at approximately 15 actionable recommendations aimed at ending HIV-related stigma and discrimination over the next three to five years.

Results needed Prime Minister Douglas tells Caribbean Human Rights Consultation

Jamaica, China Sign Framework Agreement For Transshipment Hub

The government of Jamaica has signed a framework agreement with the state-owned China Harbour Engineering Company to develop a transshipment hub in the Portland Bight area.

The selection of the environmentally sensitive Portland Bight area has led to controversy within Jamaica, as it is classified as a Protected Area.

Works Minister Dr Omar Davies said regulations would be adhered to in the “normal way.”

Sentencing delayed

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC -The sentencing of entertainer Vybz Kartel and his co-accused Shawn Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John has been delayed until Thursday April 3.


In court on Thursday morning, the Judge Justice Lennox Campbell asked the defense team provide some pertinent information before going ahead with handing down the sentences.


On March 13, Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, fellow entertainer Shawn 'Shawn Storm' Campbell, Kahira Jones and Andre St John were convicted for the August 16, 2011 murder of Clive 'Lizard' Williams.

JAMAICA-ECONOMY-IMF pleased with economic reform programme

KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC - The International Monetary Fund’s (IMF), resident representative to Jamaica, Bert Van Selm, says despite a front loaded adjustment programme, the economy has seen some growth over the first year of the programme.
Van Selm, made the comment in an address to persons attending a Financial Services Commission seminar here on Wednesday.

He asserted that Jamaica's economic reform programme is off to a strong start and for the rest of the programme period; there will be no need for further fiscal tightening, but that of staying on course.
