A very important discussion taking place at the regional conference on Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Week 2015 in the Virgin Islands (British) has to do with the concept of a single ICT space, something Jamaica’s Minister of Science, Technology, Energy and Mining Honourable Phillip Paulwell sees as a major beat as the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) seeks to abolish roaming in the Caribbean.

Hon Paulwell was at the time delivering his final speech as President of the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU), having served for three periods.

Open Data, Open Mapping: TeachOSM in the Caribbean

Web-based mapping is an activity of growing importance in many countries around the world, especially in places where base map data is often scarce and out of date. Governments are collecting more and more data, including geospatial data, and are beginning to understand the social and economic benefits of sharing the data. As part of the World Bank-DFID partnership to support Open Data in the Caribbean, Maggie Cawley and Steven Johnson conducted one-day open mapping workshops in Castries, St. Lucia, and Kingston, Jamaica during June 2015.

Guyana strengthening cyber security against hackers, fraudsters

Guyana is moving to insulate a number of loopholes and so drastically reduce the possibility of cybercrimes ranging from website hacking to fraud, officials said Wednesday.

Experts are being trained in cybercrimes legislation and enforcement while plans are on the drawing board to enact several laws related to cyber security.

Google promises to pay more attention to Caribbean’s needs

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Thursday June 4, 2015 —The first-ever Caribbean Peering and Internet Connection Forum (CarPIF) has concluded with commitments from Internet companies Akamai Technologies and Google to pay closer attention to the needs of Caribbean Internet service providers and consumers.

The promise came after more than 40 regional and international technology experts met in Barbados recently to discuss strategies for improving the economics and technical efficiency of Internet content delivery in the Caribbean.
