New Registrar General E-Services ‘Perfect Example’ of Public-Private Partnership Effectiveness

NASSAU, The Bahamas - Prime Minister Christie said he is a "firm believer" in the critical importance of Public Private Partnerships (“PPP”) and that the launch of the Registrar General's Department E-Services facility has been a perfect example of the effectiveness of such partnerships.

"We are opening new vistas for domestic and international business, and we are making it easy for you to do business online in The Bahamas," Prime Minister Christie said at the event held at the Registrar General's Department on the corner of Shirley and Charlotte Streets, January 5, 2016.

More Than 700 Girls To Engage In Computer Coding

More than 700 girls across the island will be engaged in computer coding simultaneously between Thursday, December 10 and Saturday, December 12.

The programme, ‘Jamaican Girls Coding’, is designed to target females between the ages of 12 and 14. It aims to introduce young girls to the male dominated field of computer coding.

During the three days, persons who are registered may log onto jamaicangirlscoding.com to participate in the activity from any computer in any location with internet connectivity. Persons may also use tablet computers.

Dominica to establish an IT Academy

An Information Technology academy to facilitate ongoing capacity building on a range of ICT tools is to be established here.

The IT Academy, proposed by the Organization of the Eastern Caribbean States (OAS), will complement an ongoing training for forty information technology secondary school teachers which is being funded by the OAS.

High Internet And Mobile Data Charges Hampering Business Development - Professor

Professor of Communications Policy and Digital Media at the University of the West Indies, Dr Hopeton Dunn has raised concerns that the high cost of Internet access and mobile data charges may be hampering the ability of Jamaicans to use the Internet for innovation driven activities.

Responding to questions from the The Gleaner, Dunn pointed out several weaknesses in Jamaica’s Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector.

According to Dunn, Jamaica currently benefits from access to a robust global ICT network and diverse content providers.

Jamaica to host international tech conference in April 2016

BELIZE CITY, Belize -- Montego Bay, Jamaica, will host the next regional gathering of the Caribbean Network Operators Group (CaribNOG) from April 19 to 24, 2016.

Stephen Lee, programme director of CaribNOG, made the announcement at its tenth regional meeting in Belize City.

“Jamaica is the perfect location for CaribNOG 11 because of its demonstrated capacity for innovation and its clear commitment to regional development,” Lee said.

COTED holds special session with Regional private sector Thursday

A special session on Thursday with the Region’s private sector will headline the final Ministerial Meeting of the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) for this year as efforts continue to position the business sector to drive growth and development.

The private sector is considered a critical partner in the Region’s quest for economic resilience, which is a key element of the Community’s Five-Year Strategic Plan.

OECS partners with CTU to promote ICT development in Eastern Caribbean

TORTOLA, BVI -- An agreement between the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) promises to deepen collaboration between the institutions in leveraging information and communications technology to support development in the sub-region.

Speaking at the signing ceremony in Tortola, British Virgin Islands, on September 30, representatives from both organizations expressed confidence that the formalization of their collaborative relationship would redound to the benefit of their member states.
