Caribbean faced serious health challenges, but had important successes in 2016, says PAHO

WASHINGTON, DC, USA (CMC) — From the Zika epidemic and the birth of thousands of babies with congenital malformations, through the declaration of measles as eliminated from the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) says 2016 is a year of “serious challenges and important successes” for health in the Caribbean and other places in the Americas.

Seeds of change began to bear fruit in 2016 – CARICOM Secretary-General

We have come to the end of another year of service to our Community. When the history of this year is written, it will record that the seeds of change in our Secretariat and our Community began to bear fruit in 2016,” Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque said.

He made the assertion in an end-of-year message in which he provided details of the strides that were taken in the reform process that the Secretariat and Community have embarked on.

Opposition wins in Turks and Caicos Islands elections

Preliminary results from yesterday’s general elections in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) gave victory to the main opposition Peoples Democratic Movement (PDM) of attorney Sharlene Cartwright-Robinson.

The 7,800 voters had three choices: the ruling Progressive National Party (PNP) led by Premier Dr. Rufus Ewing; the PDM and the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) led by Oswald Skippings.

Legislation to strengthen US-Caribbean Engagement heads to President Obama’s desk

WASHINGTON—Representative Eliot L. Engel (D-NY), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Representative Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), a former Chair of the Committee, today announced that their legislation to enhance U.S. engagement with the Caribbean has passed the House and Senate and is headed to the President for signature into law. The United States-Caribbean Strategic Engagement Act (H.R. 4939) calls for a new, long-term strategy to strengthen ties between the United States and its Caribbean neighbors.

CARICOM Secretariat leads discussions on services sector strategies in Belize

Officials in Belize's Services sector have been developing enhanced services sector strategies with support from the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat.

The Secretariat convened two-days of national consultations for public and private sector officials on 7-8 December through funding under the 10th EDF programme.
