These developments not only exacerbate the already tense situation but also pose significant threats to regional stability and international peace.

CARICOM Statement on the Establishment of the Haitian Presidential Council

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Georgetown, Guyana) - The Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) welcome the news today of the publication of the decree establishing the Transitional Presidential Council in Haiti. The establishment of the nine-member broad-based, politically inclusive Council signals the possibility of a new beginning for Haiti.

STATEMENT ON THE UNACCEPTABLE ESCALATION OF TENSIONS AND THREATS TO REGIONAL PEACE AND SECURITY OCCASIONED BY THE ADOPTION OF “THE ORGANIC LAW FOR THE DEFENCE OF GUYANA ESSEQUIBA” ON APRIL 3, 2024, BY THE BOLIVARIAN REPUBLIC OF VENEZUELA

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater, Georgetown, Guyana) - The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) considers that the adoption of “the Organic Law for the Defence of Guyana Essequiba” on 3 April 2024, by the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has occasioned an unacceptable escalation of tensions between that country and the Cooperative Republic of Guyana and has threatened to undermine peace and security in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Statement of the Caribbean Community on Events in Ecuador

The Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) reaffirm the importance of adherence to the principles of international law and rules of diplomatic engagement enshrined in the Vienna Convention which codifies the inviolability of diplomatic missions and consular offices.  

CARICOM is therefore deeply concerned that the Republic of Ecuador has recently taken actions that have violated the premises of the Embassy of Mexico in Quito.

Message from the Caribbean Community on the passing of The Rt. Hon. Michael de la Bastide

The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) mourns the loss of the Right Honourable Mr. Justice Michael de la Bastide who passed away on 30 March 2024.

Mr. Justice de la Bastide was the first President of the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), a role to which he applied his extensive knowledge of the law and administration. He will be remembered for establishing the foundation for high-functioning, responsive regional jurisprudence, the hallmark of the CCJ.
