Sargassum project presents at the Smithsonian

A Saint Lucian project on the transformation of sargassum seaweed into organic compost will be showcased during the Earth Optimism Summit at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, DC.

The project, the brainchild of Johannan Dujon, owner/manager of Algas Organics, will be highlighted at a gathering of 1000 conservation practitioners, pioneering scientists from varied fields, leaders in industry, philanthropists and artists. Presentations at the event will be streamed live to a global audience.

World Bank approves US$6m to protect Belize’s ecosystem

WASHINGTON, Oct. 2,CMC – With the approval of a Global Environment Facility (GEF) project amounting US$6 million the World Bank says Belize will be able to better manage natural resources key Biodiversity Areas.

“Like the rest of the Caribbean, Belize is most vulnerable to hurricanes. It is only by protecting its forest and rich environmental resources, as well as supporting reforestation that it can mitigate the effects of climate change,” said Sophie Sirtaine, World Bank Country Director for the Caribbean, on Wednesday.

CCJ orders Guyana to repay Surinamese beverage company US$6 million in environmental tax

The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) on Thursday ordered Guyana to repay a Surinamese beverage manufacturer more than US$6 million in environmental tax that had been levied on non-returnable bottles because it amounts to a discriminatory import duty that violates Caricom’s Revised Treaty of Chaguaramas (RTC).

The CCJ took note of the fact that the Guyana government had taken steps last year to amend the law to create a level playing field for both local and Caribbean beverage manufacturers.
