CARICOM, Norway strengthening already good relations

 

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque on Tuesday accredited the first Ambassador of Norway to CARICOM noting that the appointment strengthens “already good” relations and signals a new chapter in a long standing friendship with the Kingdom of Norway.

Haiti struck by deadly earthquake

(BBC) At least 10 people have been killed by an earthquake that struck off the north of Haiti, officials say.

The magnitude 5.9 quake was one of the strongest to hit the Caribbean nation since a major tremor in 2010 killed more than 200,000 people.

Several buildings are reported to have been destroyed. President Jovenel Moise has urged people to remain calm.

Government spokesman Eddy Jackson Alexis said a disaster response task force had been set up.

CARICOM targets year’s end for regional biodiversity strategy

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat has resolved to present to the Council for Trade and Economic Development (COTED) by year’s end, a CARICOM Biodiversity Strategy (CBS) that will guide the protection and sustainable use the Community’s natural resources.

Need for climate change financing in SIDS highlighted at CHOGM 2018

Rt. Hon. Andrew Holness, Prime Minister of Jamaica, this morning used the international platform of the 2018 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) to reinforce the need for financing for Small Island and Developing States (SIDS) given the existential threats climate change poses for these countries.

The Jamaican Prime Minister was speaking at the Combined Forum hosted at the Queen Elizabeth Centre, London, United Kingdom (UK).

CARICOM to get German support for Marine Protection

Secretary-General of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Ambassador Irwin LaRocque and Germany’s new Ambassador to (CARICOM) His Excellency Holger Michael signed an agreement totalling 25,700,000 euros on Monday for a Sustainable Financing Mechanism for Marine Protection in the Region.
