CARICOM and Cuba look to active role in post 2015 Agenda talks at the UN

CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Caribbean should take an active role at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) debate on the post 2015 Agenda.
This was the view expressed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guyana the Honourable Caroline Rodrigues-Birkett as she addressed the Opening Ceremony in Grenada of the Fourth Meeting of Foreign Ministers of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba on Thursday evening. The discussions take place on Friday.

I wish to thank the Government and People of Grenada for their warm hospitality and join my colleagues in echoing appreciation for being in Grenada today among great company.  As we gather on the eve of the Fourth CARICOM-Cuba Meeting of Ministers of Foreign Affairs, there are several events that are occurring at the national, regional, hemispheric, and global levels that are guaranteed to usher in changes that will require our countries to adapt to the ever evolving geopolitical environment. 

CARICOM and Cuba Foreign Ministers get together in Grenada

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and Cuba will hold discussions on advancing cooperation on developmental issues between the two sides on Friday 6 September in Grenada. A special retreat of CARICOM’s Council for Foreign and Community Relations (COFCOR), preceded Friday’s meeting.

Fidel Castro’s role in Cuba is chiefly offstage as he turns 87

HAVANA, (Reuters) – Fidel Castro turns 87 today, largely out of sight but not out of mind, as Cuba struggles to move on from his half-century rule and as many of his policies are reconsidered under the leadership of his younger brother Raul. The birthday of one of Latin America’s most iconic revolutionary figures has been a low key celebration in recent years. A choral concert in his honor at the Jose Marti national monument in Havana last evening was the only official event planned.

CUBA-POLITICS-Widow of late Cuban dissident calls for international inquiry

MIAMI, CMC – The widow of a Cuban dissident killed in a car crash in Cuba last year has called for an international inquiry into his death. Ofelia Acevedo, the widow of Oswaldo Payá, told reporters here that claims by the Spanish driver of the car in which Payá was travelling make it even more relevant for an international investigation. Angel Carromero, the driver of the crashed car, told the Madrid newspaper El Mundo last week that Payá and another dissident, Harol Cepero, were alive after the crash. Carromero said this suggested that both dissidents were later murdered.

US resumes migration talks with Cuba

WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States says it has resumed migration talks with Cuba, marking the first time since January 2011 that the periodic talks have been held.
US and Cuban officials met here on Wednesday to discuss the implementation of the 1994 and 1995 US-Cuba Migration Accords.
Under the Accords, both governments pledge to promote safe, legal, and orderly migration from Cuba to the United States.

Slow economic activity despite reforms

HAVANA, Cuba, CMC – Cuba said Monday its economy will fall short of the 3.6 percent goal for growth, an indication that President Raúl Castro’s reforms are generating little new economic activity. According to the official Cuban Communist party newspaper, Granma, despite the forecast, Castro was happy about the report on his reforms of the economy. “We continue advancing, and the results can be seen.

US resumes migration talks with Cuba

WASHINGTON, CMC – The United States says it will resume migration talks with Cuba after a long suspension.
“Continuing to ensure secure migration between the US and Cuba is consistent with our interests in promoting greater freedoms and increased respect for human rights in Cuba,” said US Department of State spokesman William Ostick in a statement.
Ostick said that US and Cuban officials will meet here next month.

Top US officials call for closure of detention center in Cuba

WASHINGTON, CMC – After visiting the controversial Guantánamo detention center in Cuba, a top United States official and two legislators have called for its immediate closure.
“We continue to believe that it is in our national interest to end detention at Guantánamo, with a safe and orderly transition of the detainees to other locations,” said US President Barack Obama’s chief of staff, Denis McDonough, and Senators Dianne Feinstein and John McCain in a brief, joint statement issued here.
