Anti-government action not goal of ‘Cuban Twitter’ – USAID chief

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – The social network set up as a form of Twitter in Cuba was not designed to foment dissent against Havana’s communist government, the head of the US agency behind it said yesterday.


Rajiv Shah, the administrator of the US Agency for Inter-national Development (USAID), appear-ed before a Senate subcommittee to discuss the agency’s $20 billion budget but some of the questioning focused on the social network ZunZuneo that USAID launched in Cuba in 2010.

CARICOM - Cuba solidify diplomatic relations

Cuba agrees to open talks with EU on new political accord

HAVANA, (Reuters) – Cuba accepted a proposal by the European Union to open negotiations on a new political accord, saying yesterday it was willing to discuss human rights as part of discussions that would end what it considers a one-sided relationship with Europe. On Feb. 10, the EU agreed to begin negotiations with Cuba to increase trade, investment and dialogue on human rights in its most significant diplomatic shift since Brussels lifted sanctions on the communist-ruled country in 2008.

CARICOM active at CELAC Summit

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     The Member States of the Caribbean Community (CARCOM) played an active role during the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States Summit (CELAC) on 28-29 January 2014 in Havana, Cuba, on the theme “Eradication of Hunger, Poverty and Inequality”.
This also applied to their role during the preceding preparatory meetings of National Coordinators on 25-26 January and of Foreign Ministers on 27 January.

The CARICOM Secretariat joins women and men globally to commemorate 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, observed from 25 November which is designated as the UN International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, to 10 December, the UN Human Rights Day.  This annual campaign spans these 16 Days in order to highlight the link between violence against women and human rights.

Cuba/Barbados mark anniversary of 1976 bombing of Cubana flight

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados and Cuba have paid homage to the victims of the 1976 bombing of a Cubana Airlines jet off the coast of Barbados that killed all 73 people on board, lamenting the fact that the masterminds of the attack were never convicted.
Cuba’s Ambassador to Barbados, Mrs Lisette Perez Perez, told the wreath laying ceremony on Sunday that what happened to the Cubana passenger plane on October 6, 1976 was not an isolated incident.

Cuban nationals detained in Bahamian territorial waters

ASSAU, Bahamas, CMC – The Bahamas government Tuesday confirmed that 13 Cuban nationals had been detained by the Defence Force after they were picked up in territorial waters on Monday night.
Foreign Affairs Minister Frederick Mitchell in a brief statement said that the “illegal migrants are to be transported to Nassau for processing before their return to Cuba”.
