Joint Press Release issued by Forum on the Future of the Caribbean Partner Institutions Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. issued April 9, 2015

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Regional and international leaders will gather in Port of Spain from 5 to 7 May 2015 to tackle challenges to Caribbean development and identify strategies for securing a sustainable future.  The Forum on the Future of the Caribbean is being co-hosted by The University of the West Indies (UWI) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Trinidad and Tobago in collaboration with United Nations System and regional inter-governmental partners, and The Commonwealth.

Warm welcoming ceremony for CARICOM-US Summit

A warm and exciting arrival ceremony set the tone for the much anticipated CARICOM-US Summit at the UWI Regional Headquarters, , Kingston, Jamaica on Thursday 9 April 2015.
Host Prime Minister Portia Simpson-Miller was joined by the CARICOM Chairman, Prime Minister Perry Christie of The Bahamas and CARICOM Secretary-General Ambassador Irwin LaRocque to welcome the full CARICOM Team. The welcome party was then joined by the outgoing Vice Chancellor of the UWI Professor Nigel Harris and the incoming Vice-Chancellor Dr. Hillary Browne to welcome the United States President.

Jamaican, US Governments committed to successful visit by President Obama

he visit to Jamaica by the President of the United States of America, Barack Obama on April 8 and 9 is no longer being designated a State Visit, which had previously been agreed and communicated.

The change takes into account the time constraints of the short duration of the visit and the established nature of a State Visit in the Jamaican context.

Throughout the planning of the Visit there has been, and continues to be, continuous dialogue between counterparts in the Government of Jamaica and the Government of the United States.

US President’s Visit Should Deepen Relations with Region

The visit of the President of the United States (US), Barack Obama, and the meeting with Heads of State and Government of CARICOM, should deepen bilateral relations between the US and the region.

Deputy National Security Advisor for Strategic Communications at the White House, Ben Rhodes, said several areas of mutual interest exist between the United States and CARICOM, including regional security and energy stability.

Mr. Rhodes further noted that the US is keenly interested in youth development and plans to foster greater partnerships with the youth of the region.

Energy and security top agenda for talks between regional leaders, Obama

ENERGY and security will dominate the discussions between Caribbean Community (CARICOM) leaders and United States President Barack Obama during their summit here tomorrow, the senior director for Western Hemisphere Affairs, Ricardo Zuniga, said yesterday.

Speaking at a White House media briefing, Zuniga described plans for the meeting as a practical agenda to continue work already started.

Stage set for CARICOM talks with US President

The event takes place on Thursday April 9 in Kingston, Jamaica.

Trinidad and Tobago assumes OAS Permanent Council Chair

The Permanent Representative of Trinidad and Tobago to the Organization of American States (OAS), Neil Parsan, has assumed the Chair of the Permanent Council of the hemispheric institution, a position he will hold for the next three months and in which he follows the Ambassador of Suriname, Niermala Badrising.

Upon assuming office, Ambassador Parsan expressed the honour he felt at leading the Permanent Council and reiterated the “commitment of Trinidad and Tobago to the values and principles of the OAS,” which he promised to defend during his term.

PM Harris to attend CARICOM-US Summit

Prime Minister of St. Kitts and Nevis, Dr. The Honourable Timothy Harris, will be among Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government to attend a summit held between the Region and the United States of America in Jamaica on April 9.

Guyana/Venezuela oil exploration conflict…Guyana pleased at CARICOM support

As conflict between Guyana and Venezuela continues over offshore oil exploration in disputed waters, Guyana has expressed satisfaction at the solidarity shown by the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Guyana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, told reporters yesterday that there have been no major changes in the matter.
However, the Foreign Affairs Minister expressed pleasure at CARICOM’s solidarity with Guyana on the matter.
