Lloyd: Sammy should not have been removed as ODI skipper

TORONTO – Former West Indies cricket captain Clive Lloyd says Darren Sammy should not have been relieved of his duties as skipper of the regional side for One-Day International matches. Sammy, who has been retained as captain of the Twenty20 and Test teams, was removed as leader of the ODI squad and replaced by Dwayne Bravo, who captained the side in the just ended ICC Champions Trophy.

Former diplomat welcomes Canada’s deployment of peace keeping troops in Haiti

OTTAWA, Canada, CMC – A former Canadian ambassador to the United Nations, Paul Heinbecker, has welcomed the decision to send Canadian troops to Haiti as part of the peacekeeping mission on the French-speaking Caribbean Community (CARICOM) country. "I think this is a gesture that is positive and helpful and will be seen positively, although 34 soldiers isn't going to change a 6,000-person mission very much," Heinbecker told CTV's Canada AM television programme. Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced the deployment on the troops earlier this week.

Jamaica to benefit from Canadian investments

Leading Canadian bank commits to complying with IRS Caribbean request

TORONTO, Canada, CMC - A leading Canadian bank here says it is committed to complying with the United States Internal Revenue Service’s (IRS) request for information about US taxpayers who may hold offshore accounts at a Caribbean bank. Last month, the IRS filed a “John Doe” summons requesting information on an unknown number of unnamed people against US taxpayers with offshore accounts at the Barbados-based FirstCaribbean International Bank (FCIB), who it suspects of having used accounts with the bank as parts of efforts to illegally evade US tax.

Canada to fund open campus education

St. John’s Antigua- Over the next five years, the University of the West Indies UWI’s distance learning programme – the Open Campus – will be receiving a total of $20 million Canadian dollars from the government of Canada. Canada apologises for botched naval exercise

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Observer - THE Canadian High Commission has apologised to the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) for a botched naval exercise in March, which saw live 50-calibre rounds being fired in Jamaican coastal waters by two of that country's naval vessels and the interference with a boat in which former Prime Minister Bruce Golding was travelling. The disclosure came on Tuesday as the JDF sought to clear the air on the incident, which the Canadian media said has caused that country much embarrassment.

Canadian priest murdered

PORT AU PRINCE, Haiti, CMC – Police were searching for the killers of Canadian priest who was shot outside a bank minutes after he withdrew US$1,000 on Thursday.
Police said 62-year-old Richard E. Joyal had just withdrawn the money from the bank when two men on a motorcycle approached and grabbed a bag he was carrying. The passenger shot him three times in the back.
Police inspector Aladin Jean-Louis said the authorities later found the money in Joyal’s wallet and the contents of his billfold included a driver’s license showing he was from Quebec.
