(Global Affairs Canada Press Release) The Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of International Development, today concluded a 2-day trip to Guyana, where he represented Canada at the 46th Regular Meeting of the Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This visit builds on the success of the Canada-CARICOM Summit, held in Ottawa from October 17 to 19, 2023, and reinforces Canada’s strategic partnership with the region. 

CARICOM Secretary-General, Ambassador Irwin LaRocque, has sent a message of condolence to the Prime Minister of Canada, Mr. Justin Trudeau, following the tragic incident in Toronto on Monday which left at least 10 people dead and several others injured.

“It is with great sadness mixed with revulsion that I, and the entire Caribbean Community, have reacted to the horror of the deadly vehicle rampage unleashed on unsuspecting, innocent persons in Toronto on 23 April, 2018”, the Secretary-General said in his message.

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad, CMC – Immigration authorities in Trinidad and Tobago say they have been advised to pursue the decision of having members of an othordox Hasdic Jewish group, Lev Tahor, returned to Canada instead of allowing them to fly on to Guatemala. A statement issued by the Ministry of National Security Thursday, said that the group which includes 13 children arrived here on Monday on board a West Jet flight from Canada. It said they had been interviewed by immigration authorities “who discovered inconsistencies in their responses.

(CARICOM Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana)     Approximately four hundred teachers in Suriname will be trained on the operations of the Caribbean Community and CARICOM Single Market and Economy (CSME). The sessions begin on Monday 3 March, 2014 at the Wyndham Garden Hotel in Paramaribo and will run until 24 March, 2014. The activity in Suriname falls under the CARICOM Trade and Competitiveness Project (CTCP) and its Information Flows component. The CTCP is executed by the CARICOM Secretariat with the assistance of Canada.

KINGSTON, Jamaica - TORONTO, Canada (IDN) — A new report has highlighted the importance of funds remitted home by migrants, which are now nearly three times the size of official development assistance given by rich developed nations and larger than private debt and portfolio equity flows to developing countries.
They exceed the foreign exchange reserves in at least 15 developing countries, and are equivalent to at least half of the level of reserves in over 50 developing countries, says the latest issue of the World Bank's Migration and Development Brief.
