Region launches on-line climate risk assessment tool

Government defends take over of merchant registries

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Prime Minister Dean Barrow is defending the decision of his government to take over the International Business Companies Registry and the International Merchant Marine Registry of Belize even as the Belize International Services Limited (BISL), the private company managing the two companies, has warned of legal action. BISL insists that it has a contract with the government that is valid until 2020, but Prime Minister Barrow told reporters that the agreement is illegal and invalid.

Junior finance minister hospitalized

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC - Junior Finance and Economic Development Minister Santiago Castillo Junior, has been hospitalised after he was seriously injured in a cycling incident. BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC - The death of 12 babies at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH), has been linked to the outbreak of it enterobacter cloacae – an organism that is said to be responsible for major outbreaks in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) all over the world. In a release on Wednesday, Director of Medical Services at the hospital, Dr. Adrian Coye noted that the organism is not a superbug. “The problem lies in the fact that it is very fastidious, difficult to clear and there is transmission by direct contact and also by indirect contact.

Authorities probe the deaths of 12 babies at hospital

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) says 12 babies have died during the month so far and it has launched an investigation to determine whether the deaths were due to an infection outbreak.
In a statement, the hospital said that the investigation is to “determine whether this is an outbreak of hospital-based (nosocomial) infection and if so, what is its source”.
The babies were all confined to the hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) after being born at the health institution.

Contractor apologises for destruction of Maya archaeological site

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC - The man at the center of the destruction of a Maya archaeological site in northern Belize, Denny Grijalva, has expressed regret at the razing of the Noh Mul monument and has launched an internal investigation into the incident. BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – The Belize government says it has launched a “vigorous” investigation into the into the circumstances surrounding the near total destruction of the Maya archaeological site known as Noh Mul in northern Belize. Police are also investigating the matter and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, the National Institute of Culture and History and the Belize Tourism Board have expressed outraged at the destruction of the Noh Mul archaeological site in the Orange Walk district.

Belize and Guatemala foreign ministers to meet in United States

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC –Foreign Minister Wilfred “Sedi” Elrington is due to meet with his Guatemalan counterpart, Fernando Carreras, in the United States on Wednesday, less than a week after Belize confirmed that there will be no referendum in the two countries on October 6 in a bid to end the long standing border dispute between them.
The meeting will also be attended by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Miguel Angel Insulza.
