CDB approves US$35M loan to improve education access in Belize

More children are expected to gain access to education in Belize with the construction of 35 new schools and the provision of 5,300 additional places across pre-primary, primary and secondary levels. These are among the benefits to flow from a USD35 million loan and a USD 461,000 grant approved  by the Board of Directors of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) to the Government of Belize at their meeting in Basseterre, St. Kitts.

 

Belize observes World AIDS Day with goal of getting to ZeroHIV

Belize joins the rest of the world on December 1 to celebrate World AIDS Day with a single goal of “Getting to Zero: Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS- related deaths.”

To raise awareness on World AIDS Day the National HIV Programme of the Ministry of Health partnered with the National AIDS Commission (NAC), Pan American Social Marketing Organization (PASMO Belize) and other partner agencies to host art and health fairs in eight locations countrywide. In Belize City the fair was held at the center of town, the Battlefield Park. 

The region signs on to plan to manage the Flying Fish

BELIZE, MAY 24 - A historic Flying Fish Fisheries Policy has been endorsed by the Caribbean Regional Fisheries Mechanism’s (CRFM) Ministerial Council.
The Sub-Regional Fishery Management Plan for the Eastern Caribbean Flying Fish Fishery was approved at the council’s just concluded eighth meeting held at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica.  
The CRFM’s Executive Director Milton Haughton says it is the first time the Caribbean has approved a joint management plan for the shared resource.

Caribbean ICT Roadshow comes to Belize City

AARON HUMES Reporting: Belize City hosted the second leg of the third annual Caribbean Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Roadshow at the Radisson Hotel in Belize City today.

ICT is basically the use of modern technology such as computers, cellular phones and so on to link with software and other tools to more effectively access, store and transmit information.

The Ministry of Energy, Science, Technology and Public Utilities (MESTPU) is collaborating with the Caribbean Telecommunications Union (CTU) to take the displays and workshops across the country.

Belize Coast Guard officer demoted following incident involving Dominica’s PM

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – The Belize National Coast Guard confirmed it had demoted an officer following an embarrassing incident involving Dominica’s Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, who was a guest of the government for the country’s independence celebrations last week.
Commander of the Belize National Coast Guard Rear Admiral John Borland said that Petty Officer Richard Ogaldez had been stripped of his rank and demoted to ordinary Seaman. He said the demotion was the result of a disciplinary tribunal.

Indigenous groups file court action to halt oil drilling activities

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – The Sarstoon Temash Institute for Indigenous Management (SATIM) and four Mayan communities in the Tamesh National Park have gone to the court seeking to prevent a United states-based oil company drilling within the national park.
SATIM and the other groups claim that US Capital Energy has started exploration work within the park and has also included the Belize government in its legal challenge.

Belize to host first ever Intra ACP global climate change conference

BELMOPAN, Belize, CMC – Belize will host the first ever first ever Intra-African Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Global Climate Change Alliance (GCCA) Programme Regional Technical Meeting (RTM) later this month. The Belize-based Caribbean Community Climate Change Centre (CCCCC) said the main objective of the July 18-19 event is to raise interest in this global programme; establish thematic working groups in order to enhance networking and communication and facilitate exchange of information and expertise within the GCCA Intra-ACP Programme.

Government places southern Belize under quarantine

BELMOPAN, CMC - The Belize government has placed a significant section of the country under an agriculture quarantine following the detection of the Mediterranean Fruit Fly. The MedFly, as the pest is also known, is detrimental to fruits and vegetables and the authorities said the quarantine had gone into effect in the Stann Creek and Toledo districts, south of here. Officials at the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA) said the high number of fruit flies detected in this latest infestation, parallels the last major detection in 2003.
