Opinion poll predicts victory for opposition part

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) is likely to win as many as 20 seats in Thursday’s general election, according to the latest opinion poll published here on Tuesday.
The poll by the Caribbean Development Research Services Inc (CADRES), shows that the BLP, lead by former prime minister Owen Arthur could win between 17 and 20 of the 30 seats to be contested in the general election.

Speaking at Paragon in St. Michael South, Prime Minister Stuart said that the CLICO issue has been wrapped in myths by the Barbados Labour Party. Caribbean celebrates signs of tourism rebound

SAN JUAN—The number of people traveling to the Caribbean is bouncing back to pre-recession levels, with visitors from Canada and the US giving a boost to a region struggling to recover from a global economic crisis, a top tourism official said. About 25 million tourists visited the Caribbean last year, a more than five per cent increase from 2011. It’s a growth rate that outpaced the rest of the world, which saw arrivals increase by 4 percent, said Beverly Nicholson-Doty, chairwoman of the Barbados-based Caribbean Tourism Organisation.

Dengue worry in Barbados

(Barbados Nation) There has been a worrying spike in dengue cases so far this year. And the Ministry of Health views the situation so seriously that it has issued a bulletin to doctors, reminding them to report any suspected cases of the disease. In the bulletin, the ministry revealed that six people were admitted to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital during the first four weeks of this year with dengue fever or dengue haemorrhagic fever. This is double the number of hospitalizations for the same period last year.

UWI amenities fee may go up

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Nation News - Students at the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus could soon see a 100 per cent increase in their amenities fee. Pro-vice-chancellor and principal Professor Sir Hilary Beckles made this revelation Wednesday night while delivering UWI’s 50th anniversary public lecture at the Errol Barrow Centre For Creative Imagination. The fee, which is paid by all students, is used to cover food services, provide full health insurance, sporting and recreation facilities as well as aid in the personal and professional development of the students.
