Barbados ‘cut off’ due to economic development

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler has expressed concern that the economic development of Barbados and other small open economies has been used as a “bludgeoning instrument” against them when it comes to concessional financing from entities like the World Bank and preferential access to markets internationally. Cuba to host Caribbean Film Market

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Cuba is to host the International Forum and Caribbean Film Market next month.
The June 13-15 event is being organised by the Travelling Caribbean Film Festival and provides a greater visibility to the films produced by Caribbean film makers.
The forum, which is a parallel event to the fifth edition of the Travelling Caribbean Film Festival, provides a unique opportunity for dialogue, knowledge exchange between film makers in the region and distribution, exhibition and film programming professionals from various countries around the world.

Finance Minister rubbishes talk of IMF agreement

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados government has described as “malicious and unfounded” reports that the island has held talks with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Finance and Economic Affairs Minister Chris Sinckler has also rubbished suggestions that Barbados would be devaluing its local currency which now trades at 50 cents to one United States dollar.

Expect busy hurricane season

Barbados welcomes new rum agreement

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Barbados government has welcomed the agreement signed by Foursquare Rum Distillery to distill, blend and bottle a brand of rum known as “10 Cane’ which officials say is expected to rake in BDS$100 million (One Barbados dollar = US$0.50 cents) in foreign exchange. “Rum is a distinct Barbadian product and I believe that we are the home of rum, and that is something that I don’t think we have fully capitalised on as yet.

Central Bank comments on OECD report

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The Central Bank of Barbados says a recent report issued by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) is raising many “difficult issues not least of which is the need for an international coordinated approach on the rights to tax”. The Central Bank in a comment on the OECD “Addressing Base Erosion and Profit Shifting (BEPS)” report said it notes the ongoing work of the Paris-based organisation of 34 countries founded in 1961 to stimulate economic progress and world trade. Make wise food choices

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - Making wise food choices would help to prevent obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, high cholesterol and other chronic non-communicable diseases (CNCDs). This is according to the National Nutrition Centre who lays out eight easy to follow guidelines in “Food Based Dietary Guidelines for Barbados.” The first of these tells you that you can “enjoy a variety of food everyday” by encompassing all foods from the six food groups of staples, fruits, vegetables, foods from animals, legumes and nuts and fats and oils.
