BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Nation News - Of all the pressing matters to be addressed by CARIC0M Heads of Government at their Port-of-Spain Summit later this week, crime and security will undoubtedly command special attention, either in a caucus or regular session.
Regional and international institutions and agencies are now increasingly lamenting the negative effects that endemic crime are having on initiatives for economic development with growth and jobs creation. There is also the related factor of organized crimes undermining efforts to improve the quality of governance.

Reducing fiscal deficit major challenge facing Barbados economy

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The major challenge facing the Barbados economy is to reduce the fiscal deficit in order to determine a policy that finds the right balance between fiscal consolidation and economic expansion. Prime Minister Freundel Stuart told a one-day National Consultation on the Economy that the country is experiencing its most severe economic challenges since World War II and that it had managed to stave off the worst effects of the economic and financial crisis which had “bedevilled the world economy over the last five years”.

Region urged to implement fisheries policies

Suriname to host regional ministers meeting on disaster

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – The regional Comprehensive Disaster Management (CDM) Strategy 2013-2023 will be among matters to be discussed when Caribbean disaster ministers meet in Suriname on Friday. The fourth meeting of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA) Council of Ministers will discuss the strategy that is intended to advance the achievements realized since the CDM approach was introduced to the region in 2001.

China potential

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados - CHINESE are big spenders and should that country become a new source for this country with regard to visitors, the increased spending will redound to the benefit of the local economy.
A three-member Chinese delegation attended one of the Mega Fam programmes and spoke highly of the benefits which can accrue to this country from tourism services, including spending.
“Chinese people love shopping and they tend to go for famous brands,” said Melody Ding of Shanghai.
