Bajan PM: LIAT a major concern

(Barbados Nation) PORT OF SPAIN – Barbados is so concerned about the future viability of regional carrier LIAT that it sought legal advice on whether its heavily subsidized competitor Caribbean Airlines (CAL) was following CARICOM rules.

Barbados under weather watch

(Barbados Nation) A weather advisory has been issued for Barbados. A strong tropical wave located about 1050 miles east-southeast of the windward islands is moving west-northwestward at around 25mph.
Satellite imagery indicates that shower and thunderstorm activity has increased in organization since this afternoon. It seems this disturbance could become a tropical depression or tropical storm later tonight or on Monday.
This system has a 70 per cent chance of becoming a tropical cyclone during the next 48 hours.

Oil clean-up still a messy issue

But the legal team representing the Canadian company originally hired to clean up the site believe Government’s continued delay in signing a contract to have the work done may have made the area even more environmentally unstable.

Sinckler: Cut could have been deeper

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - HAD Government’s Medium Term Fiscal Strategy (MTFS) not been implemented, the fiscal adjustment which now has to be made of four per cent or close to $400 million, would be times higher.

This assertion from Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, Chris Sinckler, who believes the shift being seen right now was reflective of what was happening in the global economy.

UWI’s Open Campus to be first accredited

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - History will be created in Barbados when the Barbados Accreditation Council (BAC) grants institutional accreditation status to one of the island’s tertiary educational providers – the University of the West Indies Open Campus (UWIOC).

The Open Campus will receive this award, the first of its kind on the island, next Monday, July 8 at 10 a.m. at the Council’s Headquarters at NO 123 A, “Plaza Centrale”, Roebuck Street, St. Michael.

Healthier options

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, Advocate - In an effort to curb the growing level of obesity in this island, the Ministry of Health has started talks with several fast food restaurants with the intent of having healthier foods placed on their menus.

Senior Medical Health Officer (CNCDs), Dr. Kenneth George, made this revelation yesterday during Esso’s Help Us Help programme at the Hilton Barbados.
He said that the department was in the process of engaging the restaurants in creating healthier alternatives for its client base.

BARBADOS-TRADE-Authorities cracking down on illegal trade in precious and second hand metals

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC – Barbados authorities warned Wednesday that dealers engaged in the precious and second hand metal should obtain a licence and register with the police before attempting to export those commodities. According to an official statement issues here, the dealers must also ensure that the metals are “specifically declared” to the Comptroller of Customs, and that the Precious Metals and Second Hand Metal Act 2013-3 mandates Customs to approve and inspect all exports in these commodities.
