CARICOM industrial sector to benefit from Japan-funded grant aid

(Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Secretariat, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown, Guyana) - Fourteen CARICOM Member States are expected to benefit from a Japan-funded grant aid programme intended to address industrial sector vulnerabilities.

Japan and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) signed an agreement for a 730-million-yen project titled “Project for Industrial Development and Technology Transfer in Member States of the Caribbean Community.”

Coke-Hamilton Sees Diversification in Agro-Processing and Cultural Industries

Bridgetown, BARBADOS, November 12, 2014.  While indicating the potential for the Caribbean to grow exports of agro-processed goods and increase earnings from the cultural industries a two-day conference on exports and the private sector has heard repeated calls for more Caribbean-centric data to guide policy.

Executive Director of the Caribbean Export Development Agency (Caribbean Export) Pamela Coke-Hamilton identified agro-processed goods and the cultural industries, particularly the latter, as key export earning areas for the Caribbean.

Government to adopt Red Stripe technology in Cassava Production

KINGSTON, Jamaica, Nov. 4, 2014 - Government will shortly be adopting the technology used by Red Stripe in its large-scale cassava production, so that an islandwide cassava industry can be sustained as the technology being being utilized is delivering the kind of yields that will make the industry economical.

Minister of Agriculture, Derrick Kellier pointed out that with the Red Stripe technology “We will be moving from a low of 15 tonnes per acre, to about 60 to 70 tonnes. That is tremendous to get the kind of productivity that we need to make it viable.”

Praedial larceny undermining agricultural sector

PRAEDIAL larceny has proven to be a constant disincentive to agriculture production, says CEO of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul.

The BAS is therefore appealing to the authorities to move quickly in introducing legislation to address this issue.

Furthermore, the BAS feels the legislative changes and enforcement initiatives being asked for, is needed not later, but now.

In their remarks at the formal opening ceremony of the Caribbean Week of Agriculture (CWA) in Paramaribo, Suriname on Wednesday 8 October, representatives of regional and international organisations lamented that family farmers were unheralded, even though they were playing a critical role in the agriculture sector.
