Energy

Energy work promotes energy security, affordability, and sustainability through regional policy coordination and programmes that support efficiency and transition pathways. In annual reporting, it is presented as an economic resilience priority—closely connected to competitiveness, climate commitments, and household welfare.

Task Force for Climate and Disaster Resilient Energy Supply

The vulnerability to climate and disaster risk can retard advances that are made by the region toward attainment of the transformation of the energy systems within the region, as pursued within the C-SERMS Framework and impact the ability of countries to provide: “access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all”.

CARICOM Energy Month

The objectives of the CARICOM Energy Month are to:

i. engage regional stakeholders on cross-cutting issues and multi-sectoral actions that can build economic, social, environmental, and climate resilience within CARICOM.

ii. share information and knowledge on strategies and actions being taken to transform the Region’s energy systems to become low-carbon, resilient and sustainable.

iii. highlight regional and international lessons learned and success stories in public and private sectors of the sustainable energy transition relevant to the CARICOM context.

Project “Strategic Platform to Accelerate Sustainable Energy Technology Innovation, Industry Development and Entrepreneurship in Barbados”

The Ministry of Industry, International Business,
Commerce and Small Business Development (MIICS), the Caribbean Centre
for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (CCREEE) and the United
Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO)  is developing
the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Project “Strategic Platform to
Accelerate Sustainable Energy Technology Innovation, Industry
Development and Entrepreneurship in Barbados”.

Building Energy Efficiency Project (BEEP)

On December 4 2017, The Regional Building Energy Efficiency Programme (BEEP) which aims to improve the use of energy in buildings was launched at the CARICOM Secretariat in Georgetown, Guyana.  The Launch follows the introduction of BEEPs at the CARICOM Secretariat in December 2014, and at the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) Commission in August 2015.

The BEEPs are being done to address the dependence on fossil fuels and economic vulnerability as a result of the inefficient energy use in buildings in the Community.

CARICOM – GIZ REETA Project

The Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Technical Assistance (REETA) is a four year Project funded by the Government of Germany through the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with a budget of 4.5 Million Euro. The project is headed by Dr. Andreas C. Taeuber and he is ably supported by a team of Energy experts.
